Is the hype real? Working for google
Hey Googlers, I’m going in for my GCP TAM second round on Monday and had a few QQs for you all:
1. For the RRK2 case study if there is a scenario for handling peak time workloads where the client did a lift & shift of a monolithic architecture, is the best suggestion to move them to micro services to enable serverless and auto scaling features?
2. I was told that they’ll give me 15 mins to prep after the case study is shared live, would you suggest I build a 1 pager or is that not required?Google

Don't worry, you're gonna be drowned by a firehose of information that you're going to need to get ramped up on. Just take it in as it comes. If you want to get a jump start, look at material to prepare for a Professional level GCP cert if you don't have one already. It'll be a requirement during your first year as a CE. Welcome to G.
Hey I work at Google Cloud, not as a CE but work with CEs on a daily basis. Not all CEs have to be very technical. The ones I work with are more program management focused, helping the customers accelerate their GCP adoption and help get them unblocked with any technical challenges by connecting them with other experts within Google
Thank you so much for the insight! I wasn't aware there were varying levels of technical expertise in the role. Is this a formal distinguisher in roles or just something that naturally ends up occurring due to someone's skill levels?
Maybe you have great customer skills and better than you think technical skills :)
Technical skills can be learned. People management skills are harder to learn. If you’re willing to learn the tech side, I’d hire someone I thought would be great with sales and customers.
I think others have echoed this, but nonetheless:
I’m not from the cloud org, but am also a customer engineer (originally from consulting too). I had a similar fear, but in interviews heard (and turns out to be true) that the mix from engineering to more consulting in the role can vary and you can play to your strength while learning/working on the other. I would say this: if you are *interested* in getting more technically experienced, this is a golden opportunity to take it as far as you can without having to train wholly up front (Ie it’s not a pure engineering role, and you’re given plenty of room, like truly half a year to get up to speed).
There’s a kickass CE in my team who had no prior cloud experience. Ymmv
The bar for CE is much lower than the rest of google as has been mentioned before. You will get three months to get onboarded and learn the product. If you have an interest in tech you will be fine. If tech is not something you enjoy leaning on your own then I would pass on the position.
It seems unlikely you were just "given" an engineering role without evaluating your engineering skills. Two likely scenarios, among others:
-your skills were deemed suitable and you have impostor syndrome
-your role is less technical than you think; customer success, operations or project management roles related to customer engineering teams don't require deep tech skills.
Is there any context you can share?
You will learn all this. Take the offer, evaluate your gaps, and make a plan for how to fill them.
Used to be at Deloitte but left and didn’t want to lose access to the Deloitte bowl :)
Same Google bowl is dead
Wow, I'm so sorry that you think of yourself and other women/minorities this way. I mean this only to be helpful -- you may want to consider getting professional counseling to address potential internalized racism / misogyny
The hiring bar for Cloud Sales roles is lower. Easy in, easy out. If you can deliver once you’re here, you’ll be fine.
Did you not get the idea if you are a good fit/not during interviews?
Yes will definitely do that. They did mention lots of training throughout the process so I'll ask more on that
Hey OP, I’m interviewing for the CE role right now - mind if I DM you?
Sure!
Hi OP! I’m in a similar boat and starting to interview for this role, mind if I DM?
Sure!
