I don’t have kids but a lot of parents with kids are struggling with wfh and helping their kids do their school work plus keep busy. How can we single people help if possible? Open to ideas.

Maybe you can take on the work of your co workers so they can focus on their kids? If you did 8 hours of their work, that would allow them to do a full school day with their kids. That’s probably the best way to help them out.

D1, I am happy to support my team members with kids if this comes up but beyond our immediate co-workers, I have non-consultant friends struggling.

I took K1’s advice and just reached out to a single parent friend with 3 kids. She said I can help her with one of her 3 kids on Skype for homework in the evenings. She will manage the other two kids and check into the room from time to time. We will do a test run and see how it works.

Will do!

May be you can tutor their kids via skype? Reach out to your friends and family who have kids

Thanks for this post, we definitely are struggling. My team had been great in accommodating limited windows for meetings so my husband and I can take shifts. It has required some more early morning/evening calls which is obviously inconvenient for everyone but I’m really appreciative of their extra effort. In return, I’m trying to push back more than usual on client and partner demands to lessen the burden on all of us.

Mostly echoing the above comments, but I have seen our ops team hosting 2-3 virtual activities for kids during workdays so they can stay occupied, and are encouraged to hand work off to people on the bench if needed. There is no easy way, but I think most people are understanding and willing to help during this difficult time...

Just a thought... most of our firms should have a growing bench at this point. Let’s put them to work supporting our colleagues, married and single!

Hi. I have a question. In a world where COVID is under control, how would you feel if your companies went back to being fully in the office? But maybe others were adopting a hybrid model- some days remote, some days in the office. Would it make you want to work elsewhere? How important is being able to work remote (at a location of your choice, not at client /travelling) a few days a week to your job satisfaction?

This might be the MOST important and ONLY post of any true value I post this year, so please, let me know why you might agree or disagree: With all the awakening regarding employment and compensation in our business (remote, unlimited personal time off, parental leave, equal pay, etc, etc..) wouldn’t the most amazing thing we could do be to create PENSIONS? Our parents’ generation had them. Knowing there’s going to be money there when we can’t sling ads anymore could relieve so much stress now.

My firm recently announced that they were beginning a reservation system for hoteling starting February of 2022 for offices . We were told to clear out our offices by December 31,2022 . The lease is not up for renewal until June 2024 at which point they will look to reduce their office space due to a hybrid work model . My issue is what incentive do I have to make a reservation to go to an office when I can simply continue work from home hassle free. Any Thoughts and comments?

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

(US-based question) If you work in your firm’s NYC office but live in NJ, do you pay NYC city taxes? Any obligation to pay any NY taxes? Or federal + NJ state? How does remote work factor in? I had worked at PwC for 3 busy seasons (16 months total) through a co-op program while I was in university (worked in the winter and went to school in fall/summer). If I put the dates I first started and eventually ended it looks like I’m overstating how long I’ve worked, but I also don’t want to remove/downplay the experience I got. Any suggestions?
