Personally, I caught a cold during the first week of school. I then stopped eating with the other teachers during lunch (didn't want to spread my cold) and then I realized that students have been sitting at the same table where the teachers eat lunch (sometimes parapros pull out a group for testing, etc and they'd just go into the teacher workroom). I decided then that I wasn't eating in the teacher workroom anymore. I haven't had a cold since! 😊
I get a flu shot every year. I also wipe down student desks and chairs with Clorox wipes every week during flu season. (I'm a high school teacher, btw, so lots of kids are in and out of my room.) That usually works.
Every year brings new strands of viruses and illnesses, so overzealous hand washing doesn’t allow your body to develop its natural immunity against them. I do my fair share of hand washing and use of sanitizer, but I also swear by Airborne. I use it at the first sign of sniffles (provided they’re not allergy-related) and continue for at least 3 days. I have not had a cold in 20+ years, have never had the flu (knock on wood) and have never had a flu shot.
I wash my hands several times a day, and wash before I eat. I never get the flu shot. The incidence of upper respiratory infections goes up 5 fold after the flu shot. Also, getting it back to back consecutive years makes it even less effective. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4387051/
I got sick all throughout the school year last year and it looked like it was starting up again, so I went to my doctor. No joke, it turns out that I’m allergic to something at my school. Luckily, an antihistamine does the trick. 😂 I really like my school.

Hand washing, I wish! I literally have no access to a restroom during the day due to my location and campus construction.
Airborne. I swear by it! Hand washing and hand sanitizer helps, but airborne makes all the difference in the world.
Wash hands before eating, don’t touch eyes, nose, mouth or face in general with unwashed hands. Getting flu vaccine every year does not reduce its effectiveness as it changes each year, and I believe that some people who do get flu vaccine feel they are invincible, so don’t follow good common sense hygiene or habits. Making them a ticking time bomb for bacterial or viral infections. Be smart. Antibacterial items reduce your ability to fight off bacteria’s by building a resistance. Plain old soap and water for 30+ seconds, keep hands away from face, don’t eat while working. Everything you touch then pick up food you have now transferred to your mouth.
