I don’t know what to make of this. I’ve been out of work and interviewing for 3.5 weeks now. I feel like they go really well, then I get, we will call you and let you know we have a couple other candidates. Then poof nothing. SMH…I am very skilled and would be a great benefit for someone. Has anyone else run into this problem? Please any advice would help. Thanks so much.

You are not alone. I promise you. Same situation for me for the past 2 years. After almost 30 or so interviews with cold applying to jobs with no referrals, I finally landed my first offer last month! It just takes the right opportunity to come along. Mine in particular is very niche and the offer is also for the same line of work. I got discouraged so often and applied to roles where the work or even the industry is completely different. I have the technical skill set but lacked the knowledge in that line of work. I wasn’t surprised that none of those worked out. Remember rejections are redirection to keep looking for the right role for you.

Former recruiter Fortune 500 - 100 orgs, internal and external:

There are numerous reasons your interview process can fall off - sometimes a recruiter is on PTO, sometimes the hiring manager is on PTO and the recruiter doesn’t do a good job of informing the candidates interviewing, sometimes the req got closed and they didn’t disposition any of the candidates, so nobody knows what’s going on. A myriad of things could happen.

However, as someone else suggested, what you can do is

✅ a) follow up with the hiring manager directly - let them know you enjoyed the interview, and didn’t hear back so you wanted to validate if that was the end of the process
✅ b) you can follow up with the recruiter - but at this point they’ve shown incompetence so, who knows what you’ll get there - some recruiters would rather hide than say you weren’t chosen.
❌ c) do nothing - I don’t like this approach at all.

It clearly isn’t your resume because you’re getting interviews - how far are you getting in the process? Past recruiters? To the final round? Was there any pushback on availability, start date, schedule, work from home va hybrid or on-site? Was there pushback on compensation?

People often say they never got a job because of a thank you email - maybe they haven’t but I’ve hired many of great candidates who did send me a thank you email & ive hired many who didn’t send one - but the ones who did send one, stayed closer to the engagement from start to finish - they’re also rhe ones that got to rectify any answers that may have pushed them out of contention.

If you’re not sending unique thank you letters that speak directly to something in the interview, you’re leaving an opportunity open. If you interview with 4 people, get their names and figure out their email - custom brief email thanking them for their time, something you liked they said, or cleaning up an answer that on second thought maybe wasn’t great. Either way, it’s one more way to grow your audience there, expand your connections there and hopefully give you even the slightest bit of leverage.

Also, 3.5 weeks in recruiter world isn’t long - most SLAs start to finish are between 60-90 days unless it’s a call center or something where they hire 20-50 people per class and batch hire - that’s a faster process - but the “higher” skilled you get, usually the longer the process takes.

Last but not least, keep applying at jobs at companies you’re interviewing - my current company I applied to 16 job openings with the same title on 16 different teams all with different recruiters - some recruiters like you, some won’t - also different teams pay different amounts at times for the same exact skillset. Keep applying, keep adjusting your resume so that it speaks to the role you’re applying for - not just your bullets you want to know about but tailor it so it has their language in it, and hits precisely what they say is in the day to day in the job description - and if you think you’re interviews have been the sticking point, stick to the STAR method when you interview - keep interviewing - the more confident you get, the better you’ll do.

Good luck!

We require our recruiters/hiring managers to send follow ups no matter what, so it's disappointing that you hear absolutely nothing and feel the cold shoulder. Reach back out using the forum they initially contacted you at.

Don't give up! It's definitely not a reflection of you. Talk about experience you have referencing each job description, and it'll set you apart.

I’m in the same boat right now. I’ve also noticed I’m up against 80 -300 candidates. Or the offers I have gotten are almost insulting pay wise.

I’ve applied for and been hired twice in Optum now. Both times, the interview process was over a month long. I went several weeks from interview completion to job offer. I think it just works that way sometimes.

optum was the worst job ever... very unprofessional

Same for me. No sooner they ask if I am vaccinated for covid and I say no everything goes downhill from there. It is absolutely ridiculous. I refuse to get a shot that has no long term data or information on the ingredients in it. As a medical professional we should be questioning these things not blindly following the pack. I have been denied many positions due to the fact I’m not vaccinated which I feel should be considered discrimination.

Congratulations and good luck with your new job! 🍀

I have a particular interest in the current workforce, the effect of COVID in the workplace and the impact of raising the minimum wage. I am constantly viewing job opportunities and I have a theory I strongly believe in from what I have seen. Companies aren’t really interested in hiring. It’s just a formality. During COVID, the job got done with less staff. Why bother hiring? They also don’t want to pay for higher salary jobs so the gap between lower and higher paying jobs has narrowed greatly. Good luck. Don’t give up.

I just went through multi round interviews for a complete career change. It was 6 weeks from first interview to offer letter. You may still be in the loop, and now may also be a good time to send a follow up email. The job I wanted and finally landed - I sent a brief email thanking them for the interview and outlining my excitement for the opportunity to grow within their company. I had a reply the next day, and an offer 10 days later.

like

It's only been a couple of weeks! I would just continue to apply at places and be yourself in the interview. I know it's hard at times but my company can take 4-6 weeks sometimes to hire if it's a higher level position and it feels like forever waiting for that call back... you will get a call when you least expect it!

I was given a tentative offer and they never called me back so. That happened twice in the 30 interviews.

How do you close the interview, do you summarize your top qualifications you bring and that you want the job? It helps to be direct.

Also, do you ask what the next steps are in the selection process? This gives you a timeline as to how long the process may take. During the holidays it’s challenging - as teams may be on break along with closing of budgets.

Don’t get discouraged! This does take time.

Yes, very frustrating. 14 years of case management and going nowhere fast. Makes me sad

Anyone else work for Signature Healthcare in Kentucky? Would love to discuss.

It’s not EOO’s business to ask your age. But you can do the math! I’m retired, not my choice, but anyhow retired. I was an educator a facilitator re Healthcare. Worked in a pediatric hospital for 25 years. I loved my job.
I love engaging with learners and people…but it’s Zoom now! So different.
I am applying for Pt work. Got several PT jobs in Healthcare, but I want a position that’s fun, where people are being entertained. Or Dog Walking.I love to walk and dogs are my fave.
Yes, it sounds promising when I interview. I beg for an interview! My last sentence on my cover letter is , “to know me is to love me”.
Good luck. Your job is still out there!
I suggestion to you is not to be too serious, have fun with your interview, and smile!

I have been with my company for almost 8 years. I wasn’t certified when I started but I have been now for about a year. It wasn’t required before.
