It’s like you know I’ve been crying for the past 4 hours due to an email I received from a partner.

No email is worth crying over. What did it say?

I repeat it, but I just can’t get myself to actually believe it. (Sigh)

I am a non-traditional practicing attorney doing capital markets, private equity and general corporate law and want to work for a real estate investment or development company in a business role. Currently getting my MBA and have a background in finance (I worked in commercial banking and credit prior to law school). Is this realistic? Anyone who may have made a similar transition?

Lateraled 2 months ago. Was part of a large group that was effectively two sub-groups. Worked for only one, but the other was familiar with me and respected me. Did not leave on good terms with my side. Other side said I could come back for them if it didn’t work out at new firm. I hate my new firm. I want to go back and take them up on that offer. Can that possibly work? I have doubts.

Semi-recent lateral is super toxic- has forced out two long time support staff, aggressively takes credit for others’ work, and is always finding ways to throw people under the bus. How do younger and mid levels protect themselves without getting burned? Should someone express concerns to partners, or is it just a glaring red flag that the firm has kept someone like that around? (no book and not a specialist or high biller)

Currently in-house 4th year never worked at a firm. I have a big law firm who keeps reaching out. I’ve worked with some of their attorneys before and they’d like me to come on as an associate. I like my job but the big law base salary is double what I make now. I still have student loans and would like to be able to buy a house in the next few years. I feel like maybe I should try it out for a few years and pay off my loans. But I worry that I’m going to hate firm life.

Underpaid? I took a job with a boutique firm that pays about $160k instead of doing big law because I was promised a WLB (no minimum billable, but told between 120-160 per month). I’m billing 200+ each month. Short of leaving, how do I tell them that they didn’t keep their end of the bargain?

The California bar exam has some of the lowest passage rates in the country. Could this be due to its difficulty or because anyone who can pass the baby bar exam can pass the big kid’s bar bar exam. I’ve surpassed my billable target by 200 hours already and I am one of the highest billers (firm is transparent with associate hours). Ive been saying no to all new work—currently staffed on 5 active deals. Two of my deals just went pencils down and the other 3 just signed/filed so I’ll have several quiet weeks before mid December. Am I justified in continuing to say no despite likely billing less than 10 hrs a week or should I take on more work to fill my next several weeks?

I clerked for a federal district court judge and am now doing a federal court of appeals clerkship. I have an informal understanding with my old firm that I will return. It’s a small market with only 3-4 other 100+ attorney firms. I liked my old firm and have good relationships with firm leadership. Should I still apply to other firms, to make sure I’m getting fair compensation terms? I’m not particularly interested in working elsewhere but want to make sure I don’t get shortchanged.
