Is there a colleague from the non-profit you were close to? A friend from law school? Since you’re looking for references and not people to write recommendation letters, you have a lot more options. I asked a friend who I’ve never worked with but we went to school together and he knew my work ethic from there, and I knew he’d give a great review. I’m sure you have people in your life who would do the same.

If you clerked, you should ask your judge.

But in this individual’s situation, it was clear they didn’t get on well together. I would never ask someone for a reference that I thought had any chance of giving me a negative review.

I feel you on this one. I hate having to find references and I don’t think they serve any purpose - of course anyone you recommend will say good things about you so why would the prospective employer need to make you jump through the hoop. As other posters have mentioned your best bet would be to find a colleague at the nonprofit. I wouldn’t ask for a law school friend to do it as they don’t know you professionally. If you really can’t find anyone, get a close friend to pretend they were a colleague somewhere and list them. And the rest of you don’t @ me. Sure it’s unethical but it’s a stupid policy and it would be worse for a good candidate to not be able to get a job just because their situation prevented them from having references than to mislead some recruiter for 15 minutes.
