I don’t think I’ve met a single person in biglaw that I enjoy being around or working with.

You haven't met enough tax lawyers

Go meet some Allen & Overy lawyers. I used to work there and the attorneys fucking rock (across all the offices).

Latham attorneys blow.

Wrong culture for you. Change firms. You won’t find the “perfect” firm, but at least one that has some good people to talk with. Worked for me.

When I was in big law I genuinely enjoyed working with some of the people on my team. Not all, obviously. We’d go out for drinks, dinner, even skiing when we were close to ski areas on a case. They aren’t and never were by best friends, but pleasant enough. I’d agree with other posters that OP in at the wrong firm.

Then you’re working in the wrong place(s)

I think some might be, but the issue is they have to act so corporate all the time… so we never see their true personalities. Some of those same people might be great if you met them on vacation… but yes I don’t like most of them

This is either a firm problem or a you problem, sounds like the latter though…

I get this… I’d say I like half my group, dislike the other half.

I really enjoy my colleagues on a personal level! This is the elusive “culture”—are those people “your” people, or not? Find somewhere that is. It makes a world of difference.

Asking for honest opinions: many or most of us here have great jobs, a lot of perks, excellent salaries etc. Yet I see so many people complaining that they’re having to work more, or they’re not getting a bonus, or that they miss their perks etc.
I’m aware of special situations (e.g.. parents with small children) but come on - I was laid off in 2017 and it was one of the worst things that happened to me. Show some appreciation that you got to keep your excellent job so far.

Recently joined top big data startup - If manager doesnt support my aspirations for a promotion after gaining such positive and exceeding feedback and going above the norms after 6 months with a new company, what are my options? Most HRs these days ask for previous salary slips/ bonus/hike letters without even quoting their offer. Should we proceed with what they want? Is it ethical? Any pros/cons
Any views?
I am thinking beyond just verifying if the candidate is not lying on the current salary but what if they don't even have the budget to what the candidate has asked as expectation.

Can a lawyer charge a fee for speaking events for the general public at a conference? If so, Does it matter if the lawyer is hosting the ticketed event or if a business invites the lawyer to speak at a conference and the conference pays the lawyer directly?
On one hand, it seems like being paid in your capacity as a lawyer would trigger an attorney client relationship.

Is it reasonable to be expected to spend 20-30 non-billable hours a month checking your paralegal’s work? (i.e. summarizing hundreds of records and bills). The partner said he “didn’t use paralegals” at his previous firm and eating the time is an “investment in yourself.” Is this common?
