I don't understand the need to drop MOAB (Mother of All Bombs) to take out 30 guys in caves. Wouldn't a surgical strike do ?, feels like a bazooka being used to shoot a pigeon ....

Point was to destroy the cave systems as well

Plus it created a nice feature to become a lake and waterfront for the locals.... #alternativefacts

They actually found close to 100 bodies. Updated figure. It was the weapon for the job, large complex tunnel system

like

It was the ideal weapon for the mission. On top of the fact the MOAB is some cheap ordnance. Cost-effective strike with the added psychological impact it will have on the enemy in the region that were not KIA.

Eh. I'm not against MOAB (Massive Ordinance Air Blast) in this case. If it was the second biggest bomb, we wouldn't hear anything about it.

like

Love all the armchair generals criticizing the move with next to no context. Even without any foreign affairs attached to this, it's the right thing to do. I've spent several years dealing with those cave networks and IED traps along the way. Would have loved to have a MOAB or two back then.

like

Not sure surgical strikes work well in bunkers and caves

like

Was also intended to be a statement of sorts to N. Korea in particular. Necessarily effective? Perhaps, perhaps not.

like

How do you find bodies after such a strike? I would assume they are not in one piece?

like

Development cost is different to manufacturing cost for one piece.

like

As others said, because it was the right bomb for the job. it's designed to blowup in the air above ground (or at impact) causing a wider swath of devastation than other more typical ordinance such as a the tomahawks fired on Syria or 'bunker busters' each which devote much more weight to hard casings for penetrating targets and that then turn in to shrapnel upon explosion. The problem with that shrapnel is once it's within the bunker it loses most of is effectiveness at the first few twists and turns. The MOAB conversely is made almost entirely of extremely stable explosive (so as to not risk blowing up your military base while in storage) that results in a massive150 meter concussive blast with shockwaves that reach deep into the layers of the bunker crumbling everything within it

like

There's some shitty figure going around that the bomb was hundreds of millions. It was actually about $170k. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/how-much-does-moab-bomb-cost-mother-of-all-bombs-2017-4

like

Dropping 1 bomb killing a bunch of terrorist and no civilians is a surgical strike. The size of the bomb is moot. The characteristics of this weapon make it effective against defeating the tunneling system. Right tool for the job

like

You're right, you prob know more than the experts who do this for a job.

like

It's not always about counting bodies. Sometimes you know how many people were there before, and then you see how many are there after and do the math to get an estimate. We usually have very good intel on these cells before dropping bombs like this or sending in troops to clear them out.

like

The bomb sucks out all the oxygen because it ignites fuel to create a firestorm. They are highly effective at the mouths of caves and tunnels because it removes all the oxygen from inside and bad guys lungs go "pop." It's a fuel bomb. It's brilliant.

Our nanny takes my 7 month old out for one, sometimes 2, long walks every day (weather permitting). Love the idea of fresh air every day but its often for several hours at a time and he always returns home crying bc she's pushed him to his limit between feedings. She brushes it off saying hes just fussy which kind of irks me. Im also concerned that he's spending too much time strapped in a stroller. Is it reasonable to ask her to take shorter walks? Am I overreacting?
