Because there's a lot of yt people on here who have never stepped foot in Harlem.
Hit the nail in the head. Immigrants have been deemed dangerous by previous leadership. Xenophobia and racism still leading most people’s mindset.

I believe it's the shootings and stabbings

I'm black, born and raised in NYC, and have a problem with the racism answers in here.
People think East Harlem is dangerous b/c of the high crime level. It's problematic to say a neighborhood is not dangerous, it's just black/brown, because there are plenty of predominantly black/brown neighborhoods here that are much safer. Stop writing off crime as just a "minority neighborhood norm"
What really gets me is that instead of programs being put in place to crack down on crime and make the area safe for the communities of color that live there, we get a bunch of white people from out of state displacing families. Nothing is done to solve the issues that exist. Nothing is being done about "street mentality". We just have a bigger homelessness crisis now.
And look at how that has played out during covid. The pandemic has heightened societal issues that existed before, which is why you see so many shootings in neighborhoods like Bedstuy and Bushwick which had received gentrification bandaids for their problems

I’m black and hated it because of what I actually experienced living there. Yes, racism and bias applies here, but I actually experienced danger in that area.

I didn’t like East Harlem and there are certain parts that are unsavory. I preferred to be on the west side but even then, a specific area. My caveat here is that I’m a woman and the street harassment was next level for me and my body type.

This! “Unsavory” I feel is the perfect choice of word for certain parts of town! As a woman I’ve found that the further downtown you go, the less you get harassed

I’m Asian and haven’t been there/lived there one way or the other to make an informed opinion. But I’d not let my guard down so fast especially since you said you “just moved there.”
I think it’s a good thing when potential gentrifiers are afraid of an area
Agreed
You clearly haven’t downloaded the Citizens app lol 😂

Changing the map type gives measures other than per capita
There are 194 felony assaults in the East Harlem precinct areas (23rd and 25th) YTD compared to 42 in Tribeca/Fidi (1st). Theft of property seems to be slightly more frequent downtown, however robberies are much more prevalent in EH (91 vs. 27).
Having visited East Harlem somewhat recently, it seems pretty gentrified compared to when I went about five years ago.
Suggestion for you scared white people and also black people ... stay away if you’re scared, we don’t need more gentrification anyway. Thanks!
My friend’s friend got robbed there
Yup, one of my friends was jumped by a group of people and robbed of her bag and phone near the 116th street, but that doesn’t mean the entire neighborhood is dangerous.
It’s only dangerous if you happen to be the victim of the daily shootings and stabbings.
