These kids are far more likely to actually die on the field playing football than have any serious health problems from covid - the kids want to play, let them play
Let's get athletics out of the college system first.

Have any college football players even needed to go to the hospital yet because of the pandemic, let alone die? It appears to be a non-issue for them.
They could come out and still say it was covid, but after that initial report, the high school came out and said the cause of death wasn’t actually confirmed. They just heard it was covid from some of his friends.

They want to play so let them play

You think the NFL would give up on their $8B in revenue this year? How naive.
*not NFL; the Conferences!
Ok
The NFL tests their players daily, so the pandemic risk is lower. Should they actually contract COVID, it would be on them considering most players are quarantining before/after practice and games along with their families. In theory they have a “movable” bubble, so to have contracted COVID, one would’ve needed to violate said bubble. Additionally, players had the option to opt out, and still receive compensation albeit substantially less than what some of them earn a season. That being said, some players chose to opt out, most notably a player for the KC Chiefs who is Canadian Doctor who elected to serve the community in a Canadian hospital. So no, I don’t feel bad for the players because it comes down to one personal risk tolerance.
Players clearly want to play. It’s their choice, let them play if they want to.
Since you mention college kids not getting paid I’ll assume you’re actually talking about college football, not the NFL.
The data they have seen makes it look like there is little risk for the players. Players can opt out of the season without losing a year of eligibility, so they are not being forced to play if they don’t want to.
But here is the part you are missing, they want to play. If you’re a college football player it is what you do. It is a big part of your identity. You have sacrificed so much to get to where you are that you don’t want to miss out due to something unlikely to hurt you. The people who are more at risk, their families, are threatened by the season being cancelled and them going home and brining the virus with them.
They are absolutely not high risk. Even the heavy linemen are in good health. There are a ton of players who have already gotten it and you don’t hear about any issues with their health. LSU said most of their players have already had it.
It's amazing, but the college kids really want to play. I saw several interviews with Big Ten players and their families where they were VER upset and some even crying. It's not like they're forced to play.
