I don’t work THAT much (1800h/year is my target), my weeks are usually 10-11 h m-f.

However, I’m still feeling overwhelmed and close to burnout, and I’m quite ashamed of it when other associates hit close to 3000h.

It’s not the hours, it’s the extreme perfectionism and level of detail expected that makes me hyper stressed when working, all the office politics and working for partners responsible for more they can handle and need explaining like kids, but take all the $ at the end of the day 🙄

Remember that no one is actually billing 3000 hours. They are just padding their hours. 1800 hours is a lot, and you’re the only one billing honestly.

The partners do nothing except walk from lunch to lunch to dinners or meetings where they need me to micro-prepare everything because they don’t care or have time to prepare themselves.

I have no problem preparing meetings and I’m a structured guy, but I detest preparing someone else for what they should say. Am I weird?

I have absolutely no control or autonomy in this job, and I hate it.

10-11 M-F is a 50-55 hour workweek on AVERAGE. That’s more than the average person works and is absolutely a path for burnout. Don’t let other people make you feel bad. There are far more associates in general who barely or don’t hit hours than regularly hit 2700+

Yeah sometimes I don’t get why I feel so tired when there are people who supposedly bill 200+ every month and are fine

You are not alone. I also don’t bill that much compared to others and still feel totally exhausted and burned out. Not sure how people above 2000 hours are doing it, let alone those above 2500….

I feel you. Hang in there.

Hang in there, take a break?

Oxymoron of the year!

I get hating it but it is part of the deal in some practices. You can then do it yourself if you are a partner or, if not, be the change you want to see at that point.

What do you think you signed up for? Honest question.

My thought when I decided to be a lawyer was that I would start out as a junior lawyer handling stuff largely myself under the supervision of a partner, taking on more responsibility and complex stuff as time went by before eventually making partner when I have enough experience.

I don’t know if coming out is something I should do or not anymore. My girlfriend and I want to get married in the next couple of years but thats not something I want to keep secret. It hurts me that I feel like I have to do that, but I don’t want to risk losing my job. I know they can’t fire me for being in a wlw relationship but they don’t have to give a reason. I don’t want the backlash of the community either since the area I teach in is really rural. Just sad I guess.

Is this unethical billing?

We have an associate in our office who is EXTREMELY intelligent. Two Ivy Leagues +++. But a lot of the time, he just fools around, watches a soccer game in Europe on his computer or just randomly surfs the internet.

However, he is also the most efficient guy I know. He can easily write a finished product of 8.000 words, complete with researched references, in a single day (with all these breaks!).

He bills, in understanding with partners, a lot more than the time

Does anyone else feel like the term “manage up” has been twisted from meaning “try to set expectations for your availability and process” to “do both your job AND the partners job?” So many partners just ignore email requests and pings until everything is last minute or on fire.
