I eat Chick-fil-A in the office and sometimes get bad looks. I don’t agree with the politics but can’t resist the chicken. Anyone else face a similar situation?

You’re fine. There’s no such thing as 100% ethical consumption in a capitalist society - to think so is ignorant and to shame others is frankly pretty hypocritical. We’re all doing the best we can

likesmart

What a crock. To make a sweeping generalization to justify not having to abide by any ethics or morals is ridiculous.

I guess I genuinely feel bad for people who might have them as a client, but maybe keep your love of the food on the DL. You know, like the gays have to keep their entire lives on the DL in certain hate filled spaces.

So, as one of The Gays™️, I’m going to tell you what goes through my head: 1. Does he know this company actively works against me? 2. Does he know they’re able to do that from the profits of that chicken sandwich 3. Does he try to seem “woke” or act friendly with LGBTQ+ staff? Every “YES” answer makes you look worse in my mind. Because, what you’re saying is you know and you don’t care. That your spicy chicken sandwich is worth harming me and people like me who are much less able to defend themselves than I am. And, yes, that makes me think less of you. And it also makes me want to keep my distance from you. You have the choice to continue eating your chicken and live with the reactions you’re getting or, you know, not. It’s completely up to you.

So you really are ok with contributing your hard earned money to hate groups? Yeah, you should be shamed on every purchase i.e., donation. #tasteslikehate

likefunny

Yes Research analyst, people should be shamed for their choice of lunch because of your personal feelings about it. smh. By your logic everyone should also be able to shame you for any decisions you make in your personal life, regardless of your intention, because we disagree with it. Unbelievable...

likesmart

Brown paper bag it. Or better yet, don't. The same people giving you dirty looks for eating Chic-fil-A most likely don't think twice about ordering off Amazon, rocking Nikes, or heating/cooling their apartment. And while those companies may not be homophobic, they have equal disregard for humanity. There are no upstanding corporations among the giants.

likehelpful

OP i feel you, but it seems we are outnumbered here. Personally, I think their nuggets are delicious, slightly healthier, and love that I can order 6 at a time for a cheap price. And get sweet tea. But I think we’re better off eating this in the privacy of our own homes. Or in the park across the street. There’s a lot of companies out there that contribute to terrible things, and avoiding just one for one issue doesn’t feel like a real actionable result to me, personally. What feels like actionable results are donating to causes and politicians I believe in, and spending my time volunteering and supporting these communities as best I can outside of changing my purchasing practices to make a point. We have seen with the far right that that strategy doesn’t really work. We can find better ways to solve problems than changing where we buy chicken. Just my 2 cents!

likeupliftinghelpful

They give to the Salvation Army and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Can you show me more facts on what else they give to that makes them homophobic? (Not being sarcastic.)

We work in advertising creating unnecessary wants that fuels capitalism/consumerism and that slippery slope leads to climate change aka the demise of the entire world. Eat whatever you want. I highly doubt any of them only patronize companies that have a completely clean bill. Boycotting a place doesn’t put you on a moral high horse. If you’re eating that in front of active advocates who walk the talk then that’s a different story I guess.

likesmart

That’s assuming that one’s scruples are affected by external judgment, which would be pretty sad and not done with the best intentions other than to pander to those around them. I’m just saying it’s hypocritical of people to judge when they don’t make completely ethical decisions themselves. And besides, all morals are relative. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t bring that stuff into the office. Have you no shame eating fast food in front of your peers in the first place?

So should all women who have diamond engagement/wedding rings not wear them in the office because of the horrific modern day slavery, indentured servitude tactics diamond mines use? Slippery slope, people...(and I LOATHE Chick Fil-A and the hate they support)

like

What? My point was it’s the same principle: just because the human suffering and pain and slavery it takes to get pretty diamonds isn’t happening right in your backyard, or on Twitter and Facebook every day, doesn’t mean it’s “silly“ to bring it up. But I one hundred percent agree with you that more at the gold diamond rings would be great.

Politics and human rights aside, Popeye's has a far superior sandwich. I don't trust the judgement of anyone who can go back to that Chik Fil A trash after Popeye's just owned the category.

If you eat Chick-fil-A, you are showing that you hate gay people. I know it sounds harsh, but it’s true. Few companies have made their stance and general disdain for a minority community more clear than this company which actively supports conversion therapy and all kinds of inhumane shit. With ineffective government, the only tried and true form of action we have left is how we choose to spend our money. And you really can’t “resist THAT chicken?”

likefunny

🙄I have to disagree. I’m gay and I certainly don’t feel hated by anyone around me eating chick-fil-a. Who am I to judge anyway? My shoes were made in Vietnam by most likely enslaved children. I don’t agree with it, but in the grand scheme of shit, we find a way to sleep at night

likesmartfunny

It’s a free country. But you have to live with your choices. If you are comfortable with the $ you spend there fueling the company that promotes hate. Does the chicken really taste that good? I personally never ate it. I live in NYC and so many great chicken places so don’t get why anyone with a conscious would knowingly spend money there.

likefunny

I’m about as gay as they come and I eat chick-fil-a on the regular. same way I wear clothes made by children in factories in vietnam and type this out on a phone assembled by modern-day slave labor in china. if you want to justify it and sleep at night, just say “its not ideal, but its American as fuck” 🇺🇸

likehelpful

I especially love all the "allies" telling gay people where they should and shouldn't eat or what they should feel guilty about. Also, I 💯 don't understand the hype with CFA. Their chicken is OK. Not Earth shattering. One straight person's opinion.

likeuplifting

It's simply amazing how certain people who claim they want tolerance for themselves are incapable of having any tolerance for others who disagree with them...

likesmartfunny

I tried it once and really don’t understand what the hype is. Raising Canes is way better. Honestly, stay way from fast-food as it is highly processed. You only have one body, take care of it and go get some lunch from Whole Foods instead.

Lots of people in this thread donated money to, and voted for, an anti-gay politician named Barack Obama. Some allies you are.

likesmart

I doubt Obama was anti-gay, but I suspect he didn’t want to upset his minority vote. At the end of the day, he was still a politician. There are a large number of church going socially conservative African-Americans and Hispanics. They were a big part of why California voted against marriage equality back in 2008 with Prop 8.

In the infinite expanse of space/time, the universe does not care whether you [eat chick fila, or you are gay, or have been oppressed, or if you are on time to work in the morning]. It doesn't care if Democrats or Republicans when the election. It doesn't care if the forests burn or ice melts or water rides or we all get vaporized by an alien race. You care. You care, and you desperately convince yourself that because you care, it all must have some great cosmic meaning behind it. You care because deep down you need to feel that sense of importance to avoid the incomprehensibly of your existence, to avoid being crushed by the weight of your own material insignificance. And you--like me, like everyone--project that imagined sense of importance onto the world around you because it gives you hope. - Everything is Fucked by Mark Manson, edited to apply to this ridiculous thread. Y'all give it a read. That's just chapter one.
