I enjoy working at my agency, but received a good offer elsewhere. Has anyone had luck with their current agency matching or beating the other potential role/salary?

Yes. But it's risky - you should be prepared to leave if you try it. You can't bluff. If you don't want to take the other offer AT ALL, best not to try your luck.

Yes. I was approached with the offer of a new title, big raise and shorter commute. I asked for 24 hrs to respond and scheduled a mtg with my CD to give him my 2wks. I was fully prepared to leave even though i liked where I was; it was a good team, but I needed the money. Ends up I was more valuable to the agency and our clients than i realized. I was counter offered with the title and a much larger raise, plus flexible hours for better work-life balance. The HR guy at the other agency got livid, but they ended up shuttering anyway. I stayed at my job another 5 years. If you’re invaluable they’ll let you know. But def be prepared to jet, and make sure it’s an agency you’re interested in, bc there’s not always extra cash for them to negotiate with.

I’ve never heard of a successful counter offer story. I’ve seen people shunned, managers mad, suspicious of future behavior, etc, by the fact someone was trying to weedle a better offer at their current place. If you’re unhappy enough to even interview, let alone get another offer, then it’s probably better to accept it

like

Yes I have done this but as others have said it is risky. You have to be ready to leave if they don’t counter .

like

Yes. I faked an offer with a (fake) mail from another agency, and showed that to my ecd. Raise came after 2 weeks. If you’re invaluable they’ll show you.

Of course you don’t have to act like you’re resigning. Try this ‘Hey, I received this offer (show the offer here). But I really want to stay here. But, as you know, to buy food you need money. And they offer me a lot of money (show the offer here again). I will think about this offer (show it again, gesticulating) but it would be helpful to know if there’s any chance to get a raise’ it worked like this. For real.

I’ve had a frank conversation where I said I’m very tempted to explore the offer purely for financial reasons, but wanted to talk to them first to see if they were open to meeting or at least bridging the gap before I even entertain the idea. I got a 25% raise and stayed at the company another year. Was not shunned, but had not sought out the offer or interviewed yet.

Nicely done. That's how I would do it. No bad feelings anywhere!

Never accept a counteroffer. Ever. You've tipped your hand that you aren't completely loyal and you'll end up pissing off both parties. The second layoffs happen you'll be the easy first choice. I used to be a recruiter. They're not giving you a line when they say never accept it. It's REAL true.

Perhaps you present the offer to your manager, and make it clear you are going to turn it down because you believe in your team and company. Then ask for your manager’s help in laying out a timeline or benchmarks for you to achieve the valuation you believe you’re worth. If you don’t like the plan, or your manager doesn’t help build one, perhaps you take the offer?

helpful

This advice won't work because the fact that you have an offer on the table means you were serious enough about searching that you went through all the many steps of an interview process, and worked hard enough on your portfolio, case studies, resume and other materials, to eventually secure an offer. If somebody has an offer on the table already, I wouldn't believe for a minute they the had no desire to leave - job hunting takes a lot of effort.

smart

I’d be careful about how you approach your current place. I’ve seen this many times...the current company ends up never trusting the employee again.
