I went to a Practical Nursing Program, got my BSN and just got my MSN-there is life after not passing a RN program the first time. Best choice I made.
I failed RN school as well. I’m in the process of deciding how move forward. I’m definitely not giving up. I’ve wanted this for so long. I was one semester short. I can and will do it again. If it’s something you want enough and you’re will to keep working for, it’s worth it.
Think twice about nursing
Have you come to terms with why you failed nursing school? Not saying you're like me, but I was immature and missed classes. It's been hard trying to get back into it.
I would be honest with yourself why you isn't do well.
Was it time management, pt work, wasit studies too hard, too much at onetime...instead of accelerated, can you take pt studies? It may take longer, you'll have more time for studies
Let your heart be your guide
1. Are you SURE? I don’t want to scare you - but nursing is a tough field right now. I’m in my first year and I promise I have some form of PTSD. Nursing is great if you go into a surgical center or home care though! Look for low stress jobs, and buy malpractice insurance!
2. Do accelerated BSN. It’s worth it to just knock it out in a year and a half or two. It’s what I did and it was so worth it!
3. Explore other professions like respiratory therapy!
First, don't beat yourself up...it happens. Now dust off and figure out where your difficulties were. Now decide if those difficulties were yours to own and how to do better. If they were because of outside issues, will those issues still be there if you start over? if so, how can you handle them differently? Maybe it's not the right program for you. I toured 5 schools before I enrolled. And this school wasn't even on my radar but, it fit me perfectly. Good luck.
Mount Saint Mary's has a really good accelerated program if you have a bachelors ahead of time, really high placement rate post grad
I was thinking about a direct entry MSN program. I already have a masters in psychology. Has anyone done that route? How was it?
BSN program is best. Doesn't sound like accelerated is right for you; that is more for practicing RNs from a diploma program with experience. LPN has limited practice options. First decide if that is the work you want.
I thought an accelerated program was for someone who has a non nursing bachelors degree and wants to switch to nursing- not already in nursing
Nursing is growing in how much it demands - exponentially so. Keep that in mind! That said, one girl with whom I went to nursing school washed out, but did very well in LVN school and went on and did just fine in an RN program. This was quite some time ago, but it’s possible the slower transition works better for some people.
If you do go back to nursing school, try to find one or two mentors ASAP. There are so many nurses who would help you get through it. My mentor helped me to get through my first year of nursing school, it was my toughest year. Good luck!
It is good to try hard. Bur I will always encourage someone to go for something that suitable for them...
I want to ask at what point did you “fail” nursing school? Because that means a lot. Sometimes you need to learn how you learn. Sometimes you need rearrange your life so you don’t miss class. Sometimes you may need to change schools.
