We have a problem in Strategy that we dont like silence. Silence is okay, silence is the space between the same idea kicking around and being able to actually process needs and better ideas.
Who are you and can I come work for you?
use the emoji reactions on teams: throw a 👏 or a 😂 out there every couple minutes, regardless of what’s going on in the convo
Never chime in just to say something. Find a way to ask a question to deepen your understanding.
If you’re worried that’s the perception, it probably is. If you’re not participating the impact may be people thinking you are checked out, not engaged in your job, not contributing…
Some ideas here —- “Can you talk more about ….” “What are your thoughts on …” and “what if we were to look at this from another angle…” or “thinking about our target audience, what if we….”
All openers you could use to show interest/ask questions and contribute thinking to the convo. Start with speaking up a minimum of once per meeting. It gets easier the more you do it.
Build. You represent consumers. If you ding yourself agreeing, help your team understand why an idea will work with your audience. Why it might earn media. How you can express across social. Your mind should be constantly churning on how to tighten up a plan before it hits production.
Ding= find. 🙃
One of my coworkers takes time to process and form thoughts. In meetings she thanks whoever for sharing, and tells them she's just a person who needs time to think and she'll share thoughts soon. All of our brains are different, if you work a certain way then you should say so!
I’ll add that I don’t think enough questions get asked in meetings anymore. It seems like we’re always rushed to get just a couple leaders feedback and it’s already 10 minutes over. So getting people to think a bit deeper is good. Sharpening insights and idea statements seems to always be needed. And if you’re the type of person that needs to process, adding additional value with an email of helpful builds can be a nice contribution that helps the team action the feedback.
All good advice above, i would say if you’re a thinker then use that to advantage beforehand. Ask for info before and prep some questions and ideas. OR take notes during the meeting and afterwards send round ideas/ thoughts based on those. Brainstorms and meetings can be dominated by the very verbal (i’m one!) BUT often really consider insight afterwards is GOLD . And you can be honest about your process. Say “ This is all brilliant and I’ve been thinking a lot so i hope you don’t mind if i take it away and send my thoughts”
Diversity also applies to diversity of thoughts and process.
Haha love that! But I mean more engagement with the meetings means talking more..
Just to confirm we are going to do x right? Something like that
I tend to think how the meeting will play out before going in - anticipating what questions / concerns / considerations could be asked.
I write a few pre-recommendations in case.
Feed into the agenda with whoever sets it up. Have your points before you get in.
Go in thinking / with the aim of what will push this along.

Planning Dirty have a load of resources on how to interrogate client briefs. It’s a process with lots of questions. That might help you.
When someone presents something, let them know what you liked and your takeaway. Not in a kissass way. Ask how you can assist in next steps or offer ways. Here’s the important part - don’t just say it, you MUST follow up. You initiated some discussion, even if your help isn’t needed.
It’s ok to be quiet in a meeting if you’re a dependable person outside of that meeting. It’s better to be a go-to person than someone who says a lot of nothing in meetings.
Agree AND build on (improve) good ideas Voice how the consumer thinks and feels, not just what they do or how they react. Explore how the idea or action builds commercial value. What do we learn? How do we profit? How do we improve?
Agree on all fronts. 😁
Be sure you’re gaining understanding (put in your curiosity hat) or adding value. Whatever you do, don’t talk just for it’s own sake….
