I feel like 1/4 of my job is chasing seniors/partners to respond to my emails. They tell me to have drafts ready by A to prepare to send to the client by B. I’ll check in occasionally after sending drafts to them in time for A but by day D I’m still chasing with radio silence. Any advice? I don’t want the client to think I’m ignoring them when I’m the one being ignored!

Pick up the phone sometimes. Find better seniors. Give up on partners, they’re hopeless. Chasing is a very important part of the job, sounds like you’re doing great! Here’s the gold star your seniors are denying you: 🌟

Calling partners/counsel seemingly out of the blue (aka when I’m not on their calendar) seems so scary 😰. But thank you C1, I think I needed this nudge.

like

Agree with a call. I have one partner that I have a really hard time connecting with, and I’ll just put 15 minutes on his calendar. He appreciates it because then it’s one less thing he has to track, and he can just give me feedback verbally (which for some people is a lot easier / move efficient).

like

That’s smart, maybe I’ll just insert myself onto their calendar, thanks!

4th year going into my 5th year and am leading discovery and case management on a case with a $5 million budget (yeah!) with a rocket docket. Starting to understand why partners have no time to do substantive work: it’s all answering client questions and managing staff, associates, and reviewing partners. Any tips for the transition? I’ve never been too demanding from my colleagues and usually just pick up any slack myself. Now I need to motivate others and give direction.

Hi EY and Fishes everywhere! I might be getting an offer to join tax as an S1 (or exp. assoc), probably not being able to start until mid August based off how the process has been. However, I currently work at a mid size firm and we’re already getting into busy season. How would it look if I asked EY to postpone my start date till after 10/15 and say that I’m not ready to be thrown into a Big 4 busy season and that I don’t want to leave my current firm out to dry. Thank you all so much! @EY

Question for you all: Left D to Company A for a 50% raise in TC and slated to start in <1 week. However, just got an offer at Company B for a 100% raise in TC compared to D, or 30% raise in TC compared to company A. Both firms do similar work but B provides a more solid comp package. Job duties would be relatively similar. Is the % jump worth burning the bridge? Would have chosen Company B if the offer came sooner but the % difference in A to B is at my [personal] 30% threshold. TIA!
