Probably different benchmarks. Post-tax, pre-tax, surcharges, tolls, surge, etc
Makes sense. I think it’s actually a good deal for drivers. This ride I would expect the driver to take ~$37 (75% of the $49.87)Uber takes $12.50 and govt takes the rest. Not counting the tip I have for waiting on me longer than he had to. That was a 35 minute ride. Meaning that he that if converted to an hour he made $65/h.
Less time to wait for you, less wear and tear and gas, plus unlikely he had ride immediately after yours
Some drivers also lie or exaggerate, maybe because they want tips. More charitably, those select drivers don't quite understand how the payments are calculated.
Insurance and registration fees are pretty high in NYC. But for big markets, uber drivers can make good money

Cost of driving is estimated at $0.60/mi. Taxes account for it, but it’s still unreimbursed

my understanding is uber’s cut of the fare is 20%. but they may require drivers to do certain other things that cost money (i know they need more comprehensive insurance, for example).
Ubers financial reporting says explicitly how much they take - it's around 25-30% based on the latest I've seen iirc.
I've also never had anyone volunteer a complaint to me about this, especially without being prompted, and I take several rides a day. Surprised you're hearing it so often.
The more shady thing I’ve heard is the fee I was quoted us often different than the fee the driver was told I was paying.
