I feel like he old farts in charge just get in the way of new, fresh ideas and ruin the work. What’s the solution?

Yes it’s a shame that this industry that has existed for over a century isn’t moving quickly enough to accommodate your genius. Excuse while I yawn

likefunny

You may be singing to a different tune in 10 years. I’m not advocating for people that can’t evolve with the times, but I certainly don’t want to get pushed out at 45 just because of an ageist culture. The smart ones show their value & use their experience as power.

Def posts like this 🙄

And someday when you’re experienced and senior, shall we expect you to just step aside and let the children carry the torch to greatness? Get over yourself.

OP the people youre complaining about were just as close minded and subpar in their 20s as they are now. Assholes, mediocre talents and killjoys exist in every generation. Getting older has nothing to do with it.

likeuplifting

When you get older you’ll learn a valuable lesson. You’re not as smart as you think you were and you still have a lot to learn.

Also recognize that the older you get in this industry you take on different challenges at keeping the agency going. These are not visible to you now because of the keyhole you have to look through. There are many things your elders are doing to keep you employed and complaining about being ‘held back.'

likeuplifting

Patience.

I rushed things and tried to get as close to the top as fast as I could and found myself frustrated with the attitudes and culture fostered by those from a previous generation.

Just wait, eventually you and those you prefer to surround yourself with will be in the roles necessary to affect the change you want.

Until then, observe how senior management handle their roles, good or bad, and take notes on what it is about their process that bothers you so you can reflect on it later.

I appreciate the input, I tend to agree w most of it. When the more experienced people are smart and set the bar high it makes a huge difference for the better. But when the older ppl in charge that don’t have any great work to show and sort of hold an entire agency hostage? Not saying I’m God’s gift to creativity by any stretch of the imagination but tons of young teams getting held back by ppl that don’t really set the bar high isn’t fun to watch.

Sorry. I was too quick to take offense and judge. I have no idea what’s happening in your agency. Maybe the old farts there are being stifling. I’ve lived through those situations myself when I was younger. I’ve seen many amazing ideas get killed before the client saw it. As I’ve gotten more senior and am having conversations with some of the most senior and C-level clients, I understand more what they’re up against. There are shareholders, boards of directors, and their most conservative of loyal consumers who are scared of drastic change. It doesn’t make it right, and I’m not excusing it, but it’s probably the reason why those old farts appear to be stifling your work. In my career, I’ve always tried to push for the best ideas, even if I knew the clients would balk. When things don’t move forward, you just have to be aware there are usually other forces at play that are way beyond whether or not the work is groundbreaking, original, and would drive sales. Clients are most often the biggest barriers to their own success.

So, I fucked up a bit. Was interviewing with the recruiter and they asked me my rate — I went low as I had a number for a senior role. The problem was I forgot in the beginning of the meeting it was mentioned this was an ACD role. Can I go back to them with a more appropriate number for the role should I get the offer?

Hi! I started at a new company 2 months ago and while I’m really enjoying my job so far, I’m having a hard time gauging whether or not I’m doing a “good job.” My role seems to be always evolving, which is fine and I actually enjoy being a support to the greater marketing team, but I feel like I need better defined targets to make sure I’m meeting expectations. Also, when I ask my boss what they’d like to see, I don’t ever get a clear answer. (Cont’d in comments)
