I feel like I should know this but why do some senders of emails also put themselves in copy? What’s the benefit of looking for an email in an inbox vs sent mail?

At my company your sent emails are only retained for 30 days.

I have Outlook rules that archive email by subject matter. When I am a recipient on my own emails, those emails get sorted and archived according to those rules. I am also paranoid as I’ve had a few occasions where my Outlook failed to send certain emails.

I cc myself on all emails. It is how I get time billed and how my assistant saves emails to the file. It doesn’t work for everyone, but it is a lifesaver for me.

I dictate a lot and my assistant sends for me under my outlook address. The copy let’s me know it got sent and puts it forefront for further action items.

I do it for important emails to confirm it actually sent. I had a super important email not send as a first year and have been paranoid ever since. That said, I usually bcc myself so no one can tell.

I’ve wondered this as well. I get enough emails that I don’t need my own but the reasons above make good sense

My job recently got downgraded from full time to part time back in September. I’ve been casually applying to roles that genuinely interest me, but I get rejection after rejection with no interview. A friend told me about a hotel front desk job that pays $19/hour but I was in a supervisory role that made $23-25/hour. How desperate should I be?

For greater context, I have an MBA and am completing a cert in product management next week.I have an operations/hr/customer service background.

How would you handle salary negotiation?

Class of 21. Took a job at a small general service firm in a tertiary market ~6mos ago because I wanted hands-on experience quickly. Compensation is ~$60k, which felt a little low but considering the low COL and the fact that I hadn't even been admitted to the bar yet, not bad.

How/when should I negotiate for an increase in compensation? My instinct is to ask for a salary bump to $80k around the one year mark.

I enjoy the firm and the work.

I hear first year partner compensation is actually *lower* than senior associate comp. And you have to by in. Is this true in many firms?

Besides cash, what are some other gifts you got for your paralegal/assistant at EOY?

I’m looking for some salary advice. I’m a third-year associate at an ID firm in SF, making $120,000 per year. I’m mostly doing products liability and construction defect cases. I don’t have a JD, but I got my LLM from a T14 school. I bill between 180-200 hours per month. I feel like I’m being underpaid for the work I’m doing, but I’m not really sure. Any comparisons or insight would be great.

Is it “unprofessional” or otherwise bad for a career for a firm attorney to start a YouTube channel unrelated to their work? Do the in-house folks here care whether outside counsel makes YouTube videos? Assuming nothing controversial or otherwise offensive in the YouTube content. Considering making an educational YouTube channel about how to think more critically (like a lawyer) and analyze debates/issues, whether political or not, like ads, public disputes, etc. No legal analysis or research.

How much do you rely on your para? I’m in my 30s and pretty computer literate, I don’t dictate, I like doing research etc. I know other attorneys that have their paras do all their discovery, all their research, all their motions and I wonder how it’s possible to hit billables if someone else is doing the majority of your work? Seems crazy to me.

Not a Q but I'm worried that I annoyed the partner today. I asked him A LOT of questions cuz I'm a first year and don't want to screw up. I know I should group my questions so I don't keep going to him but what if the questions pop up cuz it pertains to new things that come up later? I can't really ask them all at the same time. I told him at the end of the day that I hope I didn't bombard him too badly and he just laughed and said it's okay. He's so nice I can't really tell if he meant it.
