How to make friends?
As someone who just used a recruiter for the first time and got a great job through him, I would recommend going with someone who either works for a well-known and established firm, or someone who has their own strong record and connections. Recruiters’ value is in knowing the jobs that aren’t posted on the job boards and in leveraging their relationships with hiring partners and firm recruitment folks to get their clients ahead of the rest of the pile

Law school friends/acquaintances, folks you’ve been opposite on deals, use your network where you can. Folks are incentivized by $ so they’ll obviously paint a rosy picture of their firms but also means that they’ll help you out.
(And if you want another firm to be interested in for nearly anything corporate with remote on the table, DM me)
The market of recruiters has certainly expanded very recently. My suggestion is to talk with a couple and find the one you’re most comfortable with. Usually you can tell pretty quickly who is legit and who isn’t. A good recruiter will listen to what you’re actually looking for and will hopefully be able to provide real useful insight.

There are lots of shady recruiters out there - playing Russian roulette with your inbox is not a great move. Go with someone that you can check references on. Ask some of your friends who have used a recruiter in your market for a referral.
Good luck!

Look at their Linkedin page and make sure they've doing it a while. Ideally they have some relationships with the heads in your practice area, so when you talk, ask about that.
Don’t go with just one recruiter - different people have different networks, connections and access to unpublished roles.
Feel free to DM and I’ll send you my LinkedIn to check my bio.
