To quote from the great John Lydon, anger is an energy. We are all feeling much of what you describe, and it can lead to despair. But perhaps, like Me Too, like Black Lives Matter, this can be a catalyst for future change. Although there have been isolated bursts of this energy, notably in West Virginia a few years ago, teachers by nature are not overly confrontational. But revolutionary changes in the air now. The pandemic, and our responses to it,has highlighted systemic problems that we have long ignored. Perhaps we are waiting for a leader, someone who can coalesce the fear and grievances we have into a forward propulsion. We can certainly vote for whomever we think will help improve our lot, and maybe such tiny incremental change for the better is all we can expect. I hear you, and assure you the fault is not in you. The fault is partially in all of us, letting our complacency box us into the corner we now find ourselves in. The bigger fault lies in those who benefit from our weak and undervalued position, who strive through law and lies to marginalize us. But the solution lies within us as well. A big enough group cannot be ignored forever. It’s a shame that we have to fight for our rights, just as it is a shame for abused women and persecuted minorities to have to fight for their’s. But they are organizing, and speaking out, and building up coalitions and connections. We are teachers: we can learn from this. Despair won’t help us, but anger can be our energy. Violence is for cowards, bullies, and them. I’m talking about intellectual revolution, a sea change in the way education is understood in this country. The supreme court, doing the supreme bidding of supreme business, is weakening unions every minute. But it’s not like there’s nothing we can do. It’s hard, and almost entirely uphill, but if we can form a plan and join hands... This is how it is now, but it doesn’t have to be like this for the next generation of teachers. Or students. Or the country. We know better, and we, all of us, deserve better.

I respect you for using the little options you have to take a stand against a system that continually abuses and misuses us educators. I wish we could all take a stand like that. Together we can bring this whole system to a screeching halt and demand reflection and a Educational New Deal for students, teachers, and parents.

Not sure why the comments are so negative you’re merely reminding teachers of their worth during a year it feels we’re stepped on and finding coverage or someone to teach a class is not the fault of the teacher. Take the leave time if you have it and want to use it you’ve earned it just like any other profession.

Obviously touched a nerve there. There was no insult, intended or otherwise. Teachers are professionals and should stand up for themselves, not just keep their head down and “follow the rules.”

So you get up every day and do nothing school related? From this perspective, I see that you need to retire and let someone with passion for the craft to take your spot.

Do you ever think we accept too much in this profession? I’ve taught in other countries and there is a marked difference not just in the workload but in how the profession is perceived by society. There is a very real issue with how we value education and those that provide education in this country. We say we care about education and educators but policies, budgets, and attitudes say something different. I think the OP was just drawing attention to that. I took stress leave for one week last year. In just that week away, I was able to see the unreasonable stress and pressure placed upon teachers. And just because we carry it well (for the most part) doesn’t mean it’s right or okay. There are better ways but we have to acknowledge that this way is not sustainable or effective for the kind of results we desire.

Let me see if I understand... you were so anxious about what was being asked of teachers that you used all of your medical leave so you didn’t have to do it... some sub was hired or your colleagues are covering for you, meanwhile you CRITICIZE teachers for following the rules as we are told them and putting in the hours to teach? Wow. That’s terribly selfish of you, you won’t do it and yet you criticize those that do. Not all of us have sick days to use, most of us need our jobs. You want it both ways. Please explain to me that I misunderstood you and that you didn’t mean to insult ALL of us that are working our butts off.

Being on the outside looking in probably means that you don't get to see the full picture of what is going on. Maybe try to understand the situation from a couple more different perspectives before you pass judgment.

Oh sorry I didn't mean get out of teaching to this comment. I was responding to someone who is only in her third year and has questions about looking for something else where. I say get out because if you have second thoughts now, move on while your young.

Philosophical question (not trying to be political, just a genuine question I’ve been grappling with): do you think being pro-choice and pro-vax mandate are logically inconsistent? Both are sincere views of mine, but upon further reflection I haven’t been able to think of a way one position could be completely defended without undermining the other. Goes the other way for pro life/against vax mandates as well. The fact is, they just feel different to me, but I’m not sure why. Thoughts?

Not sure if anyone else deals with this, but I feel so inferior compared to my friends at medical school or those who went to Ivy post grads. The problem is I’ve never really been good at setting attainable goals and often get discouraged and feel as though I can never be “the high achiever”
