That’s absurd. It’s MATH homework. If he’s getting the math right that’s all that should matter.

That can be said the other way though too. If it’s math homework why is he treating it like art class?? This teacher just is trying to help your son. Personally I would be frustrated if my daughter’s lower grade teachers didn’t help her learn this very basic and important skill.

I have a first grader too. That sounds INSANE to me. My kids teacher doesn’t even grade their work. It’s about the foundations and establishing positive relationships with math and learning. I’d be pissed if my kid had the experience you’re describing. But then again we’re at a pretty progressive school so 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, I don’t think she’s not being too strict. She’s preparing him for the real world and for higher grades. If he wants to doodle, give him a scrap paper.

Doesn’t seem too strict. I would interpret this as her forcing him to pay attention to detail and maintain focus on the problem. Skills that are very useful, don’t you think?

Or he finished early and thought “oooo this needs some more pizaz! “ :)

No not normal. It’s 1st grade. She can make point by taking off 1 point (total) each time until he gets the hang of it.

Aren't you supposed to show all your work in math ?

My kid is still young but based on when I was in school, this definitely seems more strict. I was (still am) and chronic doodler. It helps me think. I don’t think I was ever docked for that in school. Maybe schools have gotten more strict on these things.

My FIL was a Montessori teacher and I will say his one advise when we had our kid. He told me that as a parent we are teachers to our kid but a teacher has to be a parent at times and help in guiding them. Your kid may turn out to be one of those creative geniuses who like to paint however saying that he or she will be penalized for doing something that isn’t intended isn’t the right way to guide or parent them. Has she coached your kid that he shouldn’t do that in homework ? Does he understand the consequences of what happened yet ? Does she do anything to help with doodling or coloring and focusing that on right place ? If not I think she is being unreasonable. It’s difficult to be a teacher and care for individual kids when I am struggling with just one but teachers have major responsibility to bring up the future generation. I wish we have more teachers who understand that and do this not just as a job. I used to teach kids once a week pre-covid and it is a huge responsibility to make sure we don’t shut down their interests . Thinking about how we parent a toddler when they start throwing things - if we say them don’t throw they do it more . If we say them , if they throw there are consequences they don’t understand . But if we tell them to use the balls for throwing and not throw other stuff they get it . And this behavior continues through out life .

When I was at school we got points for accuracy and stickers for presentation. The fact that 30 years down the line I still remember wanting stickers might be worrying but point still stands. There are more positive effective ways of getting the behavior you want than deducting accuracy points and confusing/upsetting the kid for something so minor. I'd bring it up politely with their teacher.

How frequently should one expect or advocate for a raise at a small firm? I moved to a new firm (about ten lawyers) about two and a half years ago. After my first year I got a 20% raise following a brief and exclusively positive performance review. Its been about 17 months since then and silence. I have the general sense that the firm struggled a little financially during COVID and I don't want to seem ungrateful or greedy, but apparently the firm is doing well enough to hire more associates.
