I feel like the parts of ADHD that don't suck aren't talked about that much (and I need a reminder, desperately). The one thing I like is my ability (when I can get my brain to work) to focus hard and get something done in a short amount of time. If I'm really locked in, I can get a serious amount of work done fast. feel free to add yours (please lmao💀).

The ability to make connections between disparate topics so that knowledge or insights in one domain can be applied to others. This is great for harnessing all the "useless" knowledge acquired by diving into various topics on a whim, usually while procrastinating. It makes for great out of the box thinking sometimes.

The catch is having to explain how you got there, as people get lost fast if you try to explain your logic in a straightforward manner: "well topic x reminded me of topic y which reminded me of this similar thing in topic z and those two things in combination could help our situation here..." = 😶😳😵

Empathy and being able to connect the dots

I have to agree with you. I feel like I have never heard anyone say lets talk about the things we like about ADHD. And for me, its definitely the amount of work I can get done in a short time. When I am laser focused, I can really crank out the projects.

I am glad you mentioned this. You are completely right. When I need to get soemthing done and am on the grind, I can whip out so much work in such a short period of time. It is one really nice thing. I can confirm it.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I have really been struggling with work lately. I was diagnosed with ADHD in the winter and prescribed adderall. While it helps me get up and start my day, I still completely lack motivation to actually do anything even as simple as responding to an email. Prior to the ADHD diagnosis I battled with a panic disorder for about the last decade and was prescribed xanax. However my doc didn’t feel comfortable with both scripts so I no longer (cont)

However, I still needed help planning/prioritizing my day,  listening and active note taking, and keeping myself accountable. So decided to replace meds with coffee. Also, the fact that most people on meds had to progressively increase their medication over time did not sit well with me. (cont'd)

Whew this group is a relief to find. No one at my job knows I have ADHD, and I only have one other friend with it. I manage a team of people and the stress of checking, double checking, and triple-checking everything to make sure I'm not forgetting anything or behind on anything is insane. I've kind of got the hang of keeping focus during work hours, but I'm just constantly on edge that someone will notice or I'll start falling behind.

So I had a coding interview recently and have decided that the format was actually pretty unfair for people with ADHD. Essentially you have to code the answer on a screen shared with the interviewer whilst explaining it and listening to the interviewer - all of this is anxiety provoking and distracting meaning I underperformed on quite a simple coding task. It felt a bit like asking a person who has dyslexia to compete in a spelling bee rather than a written test.

For those who were diagnosed as an adult can you provide some insight into how you were able to obtain a diagnosis. I went to my primary care dr who referred me to another dr who specialized in mental health. He asked me about 5 questions before telling me I should see a neuropsychologist for an official assessment. The referral he gave me is super pricey and apparently isn’t covered by insurance. Is that normal?

Looking for advice/input:

I’ve dealt with ADHD my entire life, although was just diagnosed last year. Throughout my career (assurance>industry>consulting), I’ve been able to “outwork” everyone else in the office to counter the lack of focus and other associated faux pas associated with the disorder. Recently have hot a point where I can’t put in the hours (3 yo/fam), and my work has taken a major hit. Anyone in consulting/assurance have any methods for managing this when it comes to PM duties?
