I feel like when I have something challenging to work on like a brief or something time sensitive, I am very productive. But with everything else, I can't seem to focus or get anything done. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yup. Also, when I have a tight deadline and/or tons of emails flying in which require short/quick work I get a ton done. When I have a whole week and some bigger projects, it is v hard not to procrastinate...

JA1, the shutting down is a problem, but being able to be productive on longer term tasks is super important too! There is not just one path to be successful.

OP, agreed, haha. I don’t have doc review, but when I was more junior I had a lot more diligence which is the transactional version. Sometimes I get in the zone and can just knock out the longer term projects, but that seems to happen like between 5 pm and 5 am instead of the opposite. 😂 🤦🏽‍♀️

Yep...and then I end up working on the weekend vowing to change my ways.

It me. And then a tight deadline comes and I haven’t finished the other work I was procrastinating on.

I am always in awe of my OCD counterparts that operate the opposite of this.

Same. It’s Parkinson’s law - work fills up the time available for its completion.

Welcome to being a more senior associate. Your days are filled with calls and meetings that you’d rather skip, so you’re stuck writing briefs at 3am.

Same here...ok, good to know I’m not alone (I guess?)

Same!!

I believe some tasks should not be rushed and you may need more time to think it

Hey Kanban fans -

Trello? Jira? Other? Why?

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Trello. Can go shallow or deep. Can't beat it for ease of use, robust free features, lot's of options from them/3Ps on the paid side. I haven't had a lot of success on data/tracking / reporting sides.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
