I feel my language skills are my biggest deterrent from ever making a Principal/Partner. I'm not English native and I still haven't developed the best of articulation skills when it comes to speaking nonstop in front of an audience. I can do 5-10mins monologues if I prep in advance but not make sales pitches beyond that. I wonder if I should move to tech or the grass is greener on other side?

Coming from a non-native speaker, keep working on it. Practice truly makes perfect in this case.

Some tactical suggestions:
1. Read. Doesn’t matter what. It will
Expand your vocabulary and help with developing story lines.
2. Talk out loud regularly and record yourself. Whether it is with people or yourself. The more often you do it, the easier it will get. Recording helps identify what to work on specifically. Consider joining toastmasters or something similar for a safe place to practice.
3. Prepare to anticipate questions and discussion topics. Before important conversations, I always focus on identifying what are the 3-5 important points I need to get across, what questions and pushback I may get and how will I respond. I literally run through the important meetings in my head or sometimes even out loud.

Good luck.

Any chance you can develop a network for your native language? Turn it into a benefit for you. Winning work goes a long way.

I’m from China and Mandarin & Cantonese language skills are highly in demand. Sometimes we have clients with operations in China but oftentimes the Chinese company needs advice and being able to speak to them in their language, not English, has helped us win the work.

I hope you’ll be able to turn this into an asset for you. I always think that someone who has mastered a second language sufficiently to be able to converse in technical or business terms with me is highly intelligent. Accent or no accent.

Good luck.

Start writing in English- essays, diary, thoughts

Why do you have to be a Brit or American? Just use words professionally that come naturally to you (and of course by reading/ writing, etc as others have suggested, you will keep adding words to your vocab that will come naturally to you). As long as you have expertise in your area and have the right level of confidence, you should be fine.

Partner and non-native English speaker.

Hmm I think P1 has solid advice. Personally I am a native speaker but I’m terrified of public speaking. I’m going to have to get over it if I ever want to make partner. If you’re able to speak publicly at all I think that’s a great start. I bet P1’s advice could get you the rest of the way.

It also says I may not be able to refinance this loan. I’m immigrant and slightly overwhelmed and want to hear best tactics used while shopping around. Thanks in advance

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!
