If you’re at Deloitte, talk with peers and your career advisor first. There are cultural elements of the firm it can take a while to understand.
Are you me?
Have a conversation with this manager and lay it out like you just did “I’ve noticed that you’ve used language to critique my work at times that implies I should have taken a different approach/had higher quality deliverable/[insert relevant example] however, you haven’t expressly told me that I should be performing better overall. Can you tell me where you think I am performing overall?”
Could also ask for specific areas you could improve, but likely from the feedback you’re getting from this manager, there are data points that he/she has already pointed out.
IMO, always better to have these conversations than be wondering how you stand and saying nothing.
Reasonable tip. I would just avoid wording that suggests poor quality because then it sounds like you’re admitting poor performance. „Different approach“ or smth similar is much better because it takes the blame off from you.
You might be right that they are not fully satisfied with your quality of work, but it’s probably not bad enough for them to start an uncomfortable conversation. If you’re really willing to learn, propose a mid-project feedback session. If you don’t care and think you‘re doing ok, you can probably sit this one out, but don’t expect anything better than an average performance evaluation then (which is fine imho) .
Source: I am a slacker myself and have delivered mediocre performances on multiple projects, so I have learned to read the signs early.
