I finally got a job and am very excited..but wanted to understand: Is 20 day PTO and 10 day holiday good? I had grand ideas of getting unlimited pto and working remotely and feel I can’t do this with 20 days The pay is good-ish and I am trying to negotiate on that. Can I negotiate on holidays, or anything else?

Unlimited PTO is the biggest scam the corporate world has given us in the past decade. The stats prove that no one uses more than PTO when they’re given unlimited, and you also aren’t getting any equity in those days you can take off. If you leave your employer with 100 hours of PTO in the bank, they have to cut you a check for that, with “unlimited” you never get to establish a balance. Also PTO and working remote have nothing to do with each other, you’re either working or not working whether you’re in the office or not. Relatively speaking 20 is a good amount, I started at ACN WITH 21 but with my promo I think it’s now like 24 or so, and I never fee constrained. Check to see if it increases with promos.

It’s not a scam if your company buys into it. I work for an FT200, global company and we have people in the UK, EU, and Aus that take 6-8 weeks off a year. So no one bats an eye if I take that amount of time off as well.

What YOE and level? Regardless, yes, that’s good. That’s 4 weeks of PTO alone and 6 weeks of total time off including holidays each year. Unlimited PTO has been shown to prevent employees from feeling comfortable taking vacations so you are better off with a generous set number. Remote work shouldn’t count against PTO so I would not worry about that either.

3 YoE, entry level startup, 110k / yr

That’s not a bad starting point

You do realize unlimited doesn’t mean you can just take off whenever and for however long you want, right? There was a study that showed the average time taken was less than 10 days primarily driven by external constraints placed on you in an unlimited pto setting. 20 days is excellent for the US!

If you use or have an option to rollover, good. Otherwise, no use. Btw: average PTO given by the corporations in USA is 2 weeks

Thats great! We get 14 to start 😂

How often does it increase? 30 is fine. If you manage your hours during the week you'll feel less of a need to jump out of your skin and take a quick holiday to Albania

Just received cousin's invite to her wedding and it's on a Sunday. It's not necessarily a destination wedding but is in a city that neither she nor her family, nor her partner's family lives, so everybody has to fly + get hotels. I'm annoyed because I think it's a but disrespectful to your guests to make them all travel and do it on a Sunday so people have to take time off work Monday in order to attend. I know I don't have to attend, but shouldn't it be convenient for guests?

The fact that I received an email on a Sunday from my senior manager asking me to not take PTO that I've earned and reserved MONTHS ago because of poor planning on his part has officially given me the push to start looking for another job. Even the partner said that it's "very important" that I be available those weeks. I'm going on a road trip with my fiancé to get away from work and have a mental break. I have been working at least 60 hours since February, but now I'm officially done.

Need some advice! I'm a recent PhD grad (30 yo) in STEM, and just got some offers from different companies. Particularly, two of them are interesting to me. 1) from a Energy Market Company in Pennsylvania as an Operations Research Scientist, 95k + 15% bonus + very good benefits and generous PTO. It's a very chill job (9-5) with good people but limited opportunity to growth. 2) from a consulting company in NYC as a data science consultant, 130k + 10k signing bonus. Which one you choose? why?
