I FINALLY passed my state’s UBE in February on my fourth try after three attempts undiagnosed and the last one with testing accommodations. (How I graduated all levels of academia without accommodations baffled my neuropsychologist) I’ve been applying for jobs since July with little luck and I’m worried that firms see the gap between graduating and my bar licensure as me being stupid/lazy with the exam.

What type of job/practice area you looking for?

I have a varied work background and am open to all sorts of jobs, but I’m mainly drawn to litigating. The majority of firms that have even bothered to interview me have all been in family law (my guess is because I clerked for a divorce firm during 3L through graduation and I speak business-level Spanish)

Those who got diagnosed as adults: how did you get your diagnosis? I've strongly suspected that I have ADD for years and just read Delivered From Distraction (amazing book) which convinced me that it was worth finally getting assessed. When I looked into formal assessments, they mostly seemed to come from educational psychologists charging 3-5k for an assessment. I can't afford that. Any advice?

But can’t figure out. Flow state only comes when I’m backed against a wall. Currently on medication. Any other tips?

I keep outlook closed while working because the notifications are very distracting and I have this huge compulsion to respond right away. I planned to open it hourly and set alarms so I wouldn’t forget. My colleague next door mentioned politely that he could hear an alarm going off every hour. Anyone know of a solution to this predicament? I don’t see a way to make outlook hold notifications and push them through only once an hour, but there might be a way.

Looking for actionable tips to improve efficiency. I’m a senior associate doing primarily employment litigation. I get great reviews on my work product, including my writing, but lately I’ve been getting feedback that I’m spending too long on tasks and partners are having to write off too much time (not good for partnership prospects). In particular, writing briefs, emails, and letters takes me forever, probably because it takes me a long time to form the right sentences. [Cont’d below]

I finally got diagnosed with ADD, inattentive type, at 28 years old. I’ve known I had depression and anxiety for years, but the symptoms and treatment never added up. It took WFH in a pandemic to realize maybe I had ADD, and still months of being dismissed and made to feel like I was crazy before I found a doctor to administer the MMPI. I feel validated, finally, but I can’t help feeling grief too over so much lost potential and unnecessary failure, especially in law school and my career.

After nearly a decade at disorganized small firms where I wore many hats (and sometimes nearly every hat!), I accepted a biglaw offer as part of a team of maybe a dozen Legal Secretaries. This firm invests a lot into training and staffing, which I think would be great for an ADHDer like myself. The firm has great Glassdoor reviews and everyone I have spoken to so far seems really happy there. But I am still nervous about the transition straight to biglaw. Any advice?
