I find budgeting unnecessary. As long as you have an emergency fund, contribution to retirement accounts, living within your means, what's the point of allocating the rest down to a penny?

Admittedly I never thought much of it until I started thinking about longer term goals (buying a house, wedding), and I started making enough that after those things you mentioned I still had money leftover

I had around 20k when I graduated. Went to a state school + worked all 4 years helped.

OP, budgeting and the level of detail vary by person, spending habits, income, life events, etc. If not caring works for you then great. I don't understand why you need to project that on others who in all likelihood are in completely different circumstances. It comes across as elitist, arrogant, and lacking empathy.

Sounds like you already are budgeting

like

I mean those are all automatic (deduction from paycheck, auto pay, etc). I don't really pay attention to it.

Because some people don't know how to live within their means. So then it's wise that they create a (once, at least) budget.

Honest question: how old are you?

27 and single.

What D1 said - I was the same. Didn't start budgeting until I bought a house and started thinking about my wedding.

If you're dissatisfied with increases in net worth, you would budget to ensure that you're really getting the satisfaction you want from dinners out vs eating in, deciding whether to replace a vehicle, or planning capitalization projects i.e. home projects. You've won the first battle -- you don't have any obscene, addiction driven hobbies.

Budgets also help you see where your money is going. For awhile we were doing great, but not saving as much as we wanted to take big trips. Found out our brewery spend was almost as much as groceries. We we're buying friends rounds all the time and didn't realize how much was going out.

like

Yea I don't have any crazy spending habits. I still go on trips and have fun but my spending mind set is still stuck in my college days. I'm always surprised how much money I have left.

I feel the same way. Maybe it's because I grew up in an extremely frugal household. Picked my undergrad based on financial aid and scholarships. Lived at home for a year, paid off all debt, and now have a generous emergency fund, am maxing my 401k and Roth IRA, and I still am able to save decent amounts of money every paycheck. #humblebrag #dontcareideserveit

Must be nice to be so blessed without any student debt.

spend analysis

I do analysis my spending. Budgeting in my opinion is allocating all your spendings and saving to a tee. I find that dumb. If gas is $5 instead of $2.50 tomorrow, I'm not going to just fill up half my tank.
