I find it crazy that my partner and I (both 32) earn £110k a year between us and yet we still don’t have enough money to live a lavish life style, we’re just what I consider to be average.

This is not that mad a view.

In many European countries, once you are "high income" in terms of distribution you can afford things like a nice house in a central area. On 100k hhi that's not really happening.

Don't react with your emotions people, the data shows the UK has a higher Gini coefficient than peer countries. That means even the top 20% are less well off compared to peers in global cities, like Paris. The US is worse in strict terms but it's easier to maintain high salary and arbitrage your COL by moving to the boonies.

Now if you're talking dual income at 100k each that's a different story.

Or to put it another way; 55k per person is not that far above the national median wage...

Your “average” is probably “lavish” to many

Love this..
OP - don’t stress much. Look at economic indicators and it’s pretty much global! As M1 indicated, look at things from gratitude lens.

Median salary for full time worker in London is ~40k. So your salaries are only slightly above that.

I just gawp at comments like this. I grew up with household income under the £40k mark and had siblings in the 90s. Amongst my school friends I was probably in the wealthier half - got bought bikes for Christmas, had holidays outside of the U.K., lived in a semi with a garden instead of a terrace with patio. Yes, welfare state was better under Labour and it was more common for one parent to stay home, but you have to be nuts to think £110k between two adults, (which is more like a single earner of £150k) is average.. Move out of London.

like

Wait how is 110 between 2 like 150 for 1 lmao.

Also move out of London is not the most realistic advice…. We all have jobs here; if I was to move to (god forbid) Manchester, there would be a significant pay cut.

And £40k in‘92, to be equivalent to £110k today, is 3.7% inflation. Pretty in line + assuming you weren’t in London means OP is making less relative to you

like

I’ve really struggled with this as well. I realised that If you’re in London and live in Zone 1/2/3, you’re looking at a bubble. Average people don’t live in the center of London. It’s a complete misconception. These are probably the wealthiest group in the whole of the UK.

£110k 10 years ago would of been considered a very high income, however the cost of living and property prices/rents have far outgrown salaries and now £110k does not get you very far at all.

like

The error here is not comparing like with like.
110k in 2012 is 140k in 2022, so per person 70k a head. That is now substantially above median income which sits at 30k. Hence, even assuming proportional growth between income and assets, 110=\=140 so the claim is undermined.

You are right, asset inflation has outstripped income growth without a doubt making those buying assets relatively less well off than previous generations.

However, for this method to work you need to pick a year to do a base rate comparison.

My wife and I combined are on £500k+ and feel like we are poor … it’s all about perspective.

funny

> feel like we’re poor

For someone so highly valued by the market, you’re not very good with words.

funny

Depends on who you are benchmarking against in terms of "lavish" lifestyle. The majority of people within central London who you are probably comparing against are either earning millions in the UK, so the top 0.5-1%, or are some of the world's wealthiest 1% who happen to live here.

As someone who was born and brought up in London, Zones 1/2 even 3 are essentially a bubble of the worlds wealthiest. Trying to live like them is a complete mistake.

I have friends who are incredibly well off through successful businesses, they all choose to either live outside of London completely or on the outskirts, Zones 4-6, and for very good reason.

like

It might not be lavish to you but earning enough to not have to worry about money is absolutely priceless.

My wife and i are at about 200k+ - don’t feel lavish at all. We are okay but when it comes to things like housing - we are struggling to find a half decent place. Property prices make London feel just crazy.

@deloitte3 problem is out of London sucks. Just gonna wait for the market to crash instead now haha

Me and my partner make combined about £115-120k. We are 30 mins out of London with 2 young kids. We scrape by!

Average salary in London is like £45k, so you're probably about right.

I know what you mean. I make $500k+ and feel pretty average in NYC.

£110k between two people is like £55k each, that is an average London salary no? In London you need at least £100k each to be living “lavish” imo

I agree, £110k between two doesn’t get far after bills etc have been paid
