Write visually. That will help.
I was a terrible visual thinker but then spent 3 years working at a VERY visual production company. All the directors rubbed off on me eventually and now I’m extremely visual. It’s all about what you’re exposed to. I would make visual things like short films to exercise the muscle. I don’t think watching movies or looking at paintings will do it.
Avoid using manifestos/dialogue as a crutch. What’s the solution when you can’t communicate with words alone?
What kinda visuals? Print, video, digital? Or all of the above?
Personally, I do everything I can to be a visual thinker. I always concede to my artistic authorities, but I find pride in being able to contribute to the mix and often help spark an interesting visual approach. I’m way better at it in video than in static executions. But it all comes down to just studying the craft. I’m sure you like movies and shows and well-done music videos, but WHY? Study them, their editing approach, etc. And don’t always feel that you have to reinvent the wheel every time. Sometimes it’s just as good to simply be smart in the ways you choose to execute, rather than trying to come up with some novel approach that no one will get except you.
Ask ADs you like what sites they look at for inspiration. They all have a few. I find those helpful, just seeing how other people have successfully visually executed ideas. It's like anything, can be hard to just come up with something out of the blue. Looking at good visual-heavy creative can spark something to get you started.
Visual direction and execution is the job of art director and ultimately if it’s a commercial the director. IMHO. Ultimately it’s why a director is hired.
Flip through CA Annuals and Archive. Tons of great visual solutions that can inspire you to think more visually.
Think of things/scenarios that work with the sound off (or make you want to turn the sound on). Because that's how most of the stuff being made today is consumed.
Also if you want to consult about this I’m happy to help. I am a director. DP and screenwriter. It’s my job to be visual when writing
