I find it hard to tell my manager that I'd like to take the time during lunch to work out to make my body feel better. Sitting all day is not doing me wonders. Any advice on this?

I think my fear is because my previous boss in industry had a minion watching how long I took on my breaks. Not because my current boss. She is lovely

Block your calendar and get one in - doesn’t need to be a marathon 90 minute sesh but if you block an hour can do a lot

like

Yeah I might do so!

If you have a lunch break, you should be able to leave and come back when your break is over. I wouldn’t think you even need to tell them what you are doing during that break.

like

True. I always feel guilty even though they are really nice people.

like

Just do it. Block your calendar and have at it.

It’s your lunch- exercise is your food! Lots of teachers (it would surprise you) walk at lunch. Even though we don’t get a lot of time- it feels good to move!

likesmarthelpful

Just do it. Occasionally I’ll do it myself and let me team know I did it (to encourage them to do it!)

like

Don’t need to explain yourself, you are entitled to a lunch hour - whatever you do there is your time, not work’s.

I did a consistent hour workout during lunch to the point that if I didn’t go (bc of a meeting), they’ll ask why I’m skipping. It feels weird and secretive at first, but your boss and colleagues will totally respect it for stepping out and focusing on your health/not think about work.

like

OP, I feel guilty just like you, and it’s really dumb. To everybody’s point your lunch hour is yours use it how you want. One other thing that I keep in mind, we are all high performers, and that exercise helps us to continue to be high performers at work and at home.

like

I’d just let your manager know you’d like to block off time to exercise during the day and maybe ask what time is optimal. I’m a lawyer and don’t have set “breaks” so it’s different, but I let my boss know I’d like to be able to go to the gym during the day and he was very supportive and I’ve never had a conflict as a result.

I agree with others to just take it, and be reasonable/flexible.

I have no problem with someone who works with me running to the gym, walk, errands, during “lunch.” What I would have a problem with is doing something like that for an hour and then also taking time out later in the day for a proper lunch break.

Are y’all professionals? I have practically no one scrutinizing my time or when and how I take lunch as long as my billables look good so I can’t fathom taking issue with a coworker having flexibility with gym and then lunch or whatever they need to do. Sounds toxic.

I recently got a job offer from a company I used to work for that has a great work/life balance and culture but has a slower track to get promoted. My current employer has a not great work/life balance but it’s much easier to get promoted. Currently 5 years into my career currently bouncing between a project lead and a discipline manager… it’s a decent pay bump- 30%. But is it worth giving up the future potential advancements ?
