Love it when western media goes nuts when another country acts in self interest.
Acting in self interest during a time when the globe is attempting to strategize together is counterproductive to our cause, so ya, why wouldn't they have a small issue with it?
The issue isn’t whether India (or any nation) should act in their best interest. Of course they should. That does not mean that the choice should be free of consequences. By choosing to not join in support of oil sanctions, other countries, the US included, are within their rights to punish India’s actions.
Slippery slope indeed. Acting in your best interest comes with consequences. Like the 2 decades in Afghanistan, chaos in Syria and other places in ME, headaches now in Europe etc. It's a consequence of someone's acting in their self interest that Russia (who too is acting in their self interest) is invading Ukraine. This argument can be used by any nation to argue against any military conflict past or present in any corner of the world. It boils down to : who has more muscle power - economic and military, to tilt the balance in their favor. Russia is a huge geopolitical power in Asia with a longstanding relationship with India, something India is likely to hold onto for two reasons :1 the historical aspect of it. Kissinger was anti-India in the eyes of Indian political machinery (for those old enough to remember that time). 2. Asia in general does not view US as a reliable partner, more like an opportunistic bully who'd use its military and economic power to have it their way. US history in that region is what folks would point to as evidence. And then, US is geographically far from India than Russia is when it comes to containing China and Pakistan - two countries India remains at loggerheads with

This is what happens when you push an "America First" foreign policy.
India is doing India First and saying they care about their economic growth more than humanitarian issues in Ukraine
Until we build an actual global coalition interested in liberal democracy, we'll keep seeing conventional and economic warfare as autocratic regimes take whatever they can. It's on the US to embrace liberal policies that will prove democracy can be better than autocracy, both in terms of economic output and quality of life.
Manager 1, while it is 12 percent of the world's population it is a huge portion of the world's economy and military expenditure (certainly greater than half). If you include the major non NATO allies (Japan, South Korea, Aus/nz, Taiwan) its even a greater portion.

If India cannot support US interests then US should not support India's either. US needs to turn on the sanction dial on India.
U.S. goods and services trade with India totaled an estimated $146.1 billion in 2019. Exports were $58.6 billion; imports were $87.4 billion.

I hesitate to do this. The main point the US is getting across is “we won’t forget this in the future and adjust accordingly”.
India and China have a lot of potential, but it’s still the US and its allies world and everyone is just living in it and that’s not going to change anytime soon.
So what? India is looking after their interests and buying it legitimately.

We should put sanctions on EU first, as they are still getting oil from Russia

Perhaps Ukraine shouldn’t be selling tanks to Pakistan? Can’t blame India for acting in their own self-interest when Ukraine did the same.
@M1 we do love the US and US culture. We are against US Foreign Policy

You do realize that the war is between Ukraine and Russia?
India is screwing over Ukrainians, not Americans. Americans will be fine.

I think it was widely expected that India and China would buy up what they could given the oil market being what it is. This may help Russia some, but the sanctions are far more crippling than just losing our on revenue from some of their oil.
Let’s see, the sanctions are not going to stop the invasion nor have they jeopardized Putin’s domestic support. So complete failure.
Further, they are jeopardizing the integrity of the western economic system that is reliant on global free trade. The last 18 months have proven how fragile supply chains are. Every non-western country should think twice about integrating into this system if they can be ‘canceled’ with no recourse. China wins big as an alternative trade partner.
Oh man, how clueless can people get. Some facts for all those advocating with 0 knowledge - Germany (at this very time) is getting 40% of its energy from Russia. So if you're going to go the sanctions route, let's start there shall we. And for the clueless, despite what Brandon feeds you - the US has NOT sanctioned any Russian energy, all that he has done is refused to purchase Russian oil (dumbos - not the same thing). Other examples of trade still occurring with Russia - German cars are still being sold there along with Italian luxury goods (before going on an online diatribe maybe just read up on the exclusions list to these sanctions will ya) And just like the US always put itself first, every other country is going to do the same. Maybe question yourself - where was Brandon and gang (and their fake concern for democracy) when the Saudis were bombing the heck out of Yemen or the Chinese rounding up 2 million Uighurs for their concentration camps. Don't hear any sanctions news for that do ya - all a matter of convenience and double standards.

The more Russia pumps, the faster their equipment, which cannot be repaired or replaced, breaks. They are economic handcuffs.
Chief
Right on time. This was expected. China will do the same soon.
Oil price is going to drop since India and China can’t pass up this sort of deal taking them out of the supply for the rest of the world, meaning Russia is going to pump a lot in order to keep them interested at a lower price, work their equipment hard, which will break and not be able to be repaired due to sanctions.
Economic handcuffs working exactly how they were designed.

I have always had such high hopes of india. Secular democracy, economic powerhouse, educated workforce. But their actions on the global stage have small power mindset. I think countries like India need to start thinking of themselves as true responsible global powers, than act like smaller developing nations.

Sanction workarounds.

Buying oil on the open market is a sanction workaround? No, it’s not. It’s buying oil on the open market.
We Indians cannot pass up a good deal.
