I gave notice and expected to let clients know directly that I was leaving (as I’d done when I left my prior firm). Every single partner I asked told me not to reach out to the client to let them know and that they’d handle directly. I feel like I have strong relationships with some clients, so it feels weird disappearing without saying anything directly. Is this just an anti-poaching technique? Is there any way to salvage the relationships on my end for purposes of networking?

Yes they’re worried about clients leaving. Screw that. I’d just email them and let them know you’re leaving and really enjoyed working with them.

I wouldn’t leave a paper trail. Quick call or just tack it on next time you’re on the phone with them.

Are you not required by the ABA to tell clients when you are no longer able to represent them?

see ABA opinion of December 2019 on this. Lawyers may contact clients and firms may not constraint a lawyer from leaving or financially penalise them.

If I found a house on the market, sent it to my realtor and asked if we can go see this property, he responded said it would probably be tomorrow, seller says it probably won’t pass inspections for financing so I say okay forget it because I think this realtor won’t be any value add since this is an investment property. He does go off and lists things that need work. Will he have probably cause to collect a commission if I go directly to seller with an offer?

My biglaw job is not amazing, but also isn’t terrible. I like some of the people and a partner or two. The work, though, is boring and as my seniority increases I just get more of it. I don’t want to be partner and I’ve been ready to leave for a few years. But, now that I got an offer to go in-house I feel sad and guilty about leaving the only legal job I’ve ever had. Am I being disloyal by leaving? What about the friends/colleagues I’m leaving behind? Are these feelings normal?

I need an adult. Our team paralegal and senior attorney do not get along. Senior attorney asks for things to be done usually around 4-6pm. Paralegal will ignore the request completely, either because it’s “last minute” or just out of spite. Senior attorney does not respect boundaries, but paralegal does not realize that ignoring the request just makes more work for the rest of us. This is exhausting and occurs at least 2 to 3 times a week. Is there any way to resolve this conflict?

Can anyone recommend a recruiter for U.S. attorneys looking to lateral abroad (or to firms where it may be possible to work fully remotely from abroad)? I love my job, but due to family circumstances would really like to relocate abroad and continue working in U.S. Big Law. The country I'd be relocating to is one where many U.S. firms have offices, so hopefully it wouldn't raise tax issues/is possible. But I'm skeptical that my current firm would be ok with fully remote, hence seeking out info.

I was at a dinner tonight with a Partner, a Counsel, and a mid-level, and literally we had nothing to talk about but work. Like it’s all we do, every waking hour. I really feel like I have no purpose in life right now, and viewing these people as iterations of my future, it doesn’t seem like this is going to change if I stay in BigLaw. On one hand I feel too cowardly to leave BigLaw right now if a recession is occurring. On the other, life is too short for this living purgatory.

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

Partners/anyone on a hiring committee: what are your thoughts on hiring/hiring back associates who left big law to go in-house, but have decided they want to return to law firm life?

After 7 years of working at a firm, I’m itching to try something new. But I worry I’ll hate in-house work (and hate the pay cut, too, let’s be real). And when I’m not totally exhausted, overwhelmed, and stuck in discovery hell, I actually like big law work. Just wondering what my chances of bouncing back might be.

Is it harder to meet billables in certain practice areas? I’m in T&E and in busy times I’ll be working on 15 different clients in a single day. I feel like I lose so much time task-switching and my billable hours also don’t reflect the mental load I carry around thinking about all the moving parts for so many different clients. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Have you found any time entry or organizational tools that have helped you?

Will employer likely see the email?

How hectic has your life been as a mid-level/senior fund associate? I know it is deal/firm dependent, but have heard they it is very busy during the week, but weekends can generally be free (at least Friday night/Saturday).
