I get it that there are a lot of annoying parts of our job. But am I crazy to think the positives far outweigh them? I'm an experienced hire and I am in constant disbelief at the pay and benefits...

I was making 17/hr as an IT contractor with no paid vacation and no subsidized health insurance (75/week for me only) plus little hope of promotion 9 years ago. Now I'm well into 6 figures, benefits are incredible, promotion is expected. People are bitching about travel and 14 hour days and not being able to charge lunch? I was doing that for 50k less than 3 years ago.

Been in industry, enjoy the politics and waiting for your boss to leave/die.

You are also probably HR. But compared to the average American, yes.

Yes, not sure why there is so much whining about our jobs. It's far better than what most do.

I think experienced hires have it better with pay...

it is because all of the entitled participation trophy collectors and PC police officers want more. and most complaining are not adding any real value to their clients or practice. being able to create a nice looking deck doesn't constitute a raise or a high rating.

Salesforce, manager, 126. Travel is better in planes with TSA pre and Lyft at the end than driving in rush hour traffic 2x/day, for me.

Haha airport lounges precheck all that shit just really lost it charm for me....ready to leave for a good pay bump and promotion opportunity personnally. I miss happy hours, seeing my wife during the week, not waking up at 4 am for that stupid flight...it all jus wore thin. U can make good money at most respectable companies. Consulting doesn't have it all, except for MBB...their perks are unreal.

@OP Your comparison scale is a totally different basis than what most consultants are using. The comparison I use is peers at my level, aka. My classmates from college. As an example, all my peers are at $110K+ and I got annoyed being at 90K, so I left for an industry job and got what my peers two years out of college were making. Sure we have different peer groups but that's got to be the basis of comparison. I'm not going to compare myself to a service worker when I negotiate pay with companies, it just wouldn't make sense.

like

Think it really depends on your experience in consulting. My salary is great. However, I HATE the work I do. I'd rather take a pay cut than fly every week to sit in front of a computer and do formatting work for the same client for years.

like

I think what OP is trying to say is that there's more outside the consulting bubble and overall corporate bubble that many people in this industry don't get. There are jobs that are significantly harder without all the benefits/comp we get. A lot of people here only compare themselves to their corporate peers

I don't have an MBA. It's great, more is always better (assuming you're doing what you want and have the desired amount of balance, which may be very low), but I'm talking about bitching constantly in relation to current station, not stopping to strive for more.

like

Please do state what u do, level and what u make. Industry def pays better for cyber so that's why I'm planning to leave. The travel gets old quick

like

MBB perks are overrated (and highly dependent on location!)

No

Btw. Took a pay cut to come back to consulting. No regrets

It's not that I'm "gee whiz" about the travel/status anymore (some of my friends feel that way about me) but I just leave early and don't stress about delays, soak up the freebies, and it's all good. I fly in Sunday night not Monday morning. I was working 14 hrs a day at the office pre-consulting so wasn't seeing my wife during the week anyhow. Then I was traveling with a job that wasn't flying me home on weekends for multi-week trips, now I'm home every weekend. Beats shoveling shit, anyhow.

D2 but why does that dick-waving contest matter? It's never been about what my friends make for me, it's just bizarre that that matters to you TBH. Not saying be happy at 90k but why does it matter if your friends are making 110 or 70? Or 35?

like

I have a friend who's a bank VP, makes about a quarter mil with no business travel. Most of my other non-consulting friends make way less, many made more before I got in to consulting. It's just never mattered to me beyond being paid fairly for my work and providing for myself and my family.

Has anyone negotiated pay at a hospital or company that states they have different levels/tiers of fixed pay for so-and-so profession and can’t budge? I’ve worked in other fields prior to healthcare and have a hard time believing every (pick profession like PT) gets paid exactly (pick random number like $72,345). I’m skeptical because it sounds like “we have levels/tiers of fixed pay and can’t budge” is just an excuse to shut down negotiation right away. Can anyone share their experience?

I am a second year at a V50 and have never billed for reading emails or entering my time. (1) How much do you bill for these activities as a junior associate? Like .1 per time entry per matter? And how do you accurately estimate time spent on emails? I feel like I'm reading emails all day. (2) What narratives do you use for emails and time entry? (FYI we only block bill.)

Hey all, looking for some career advice.

I have 4+ years of hospitality management experience and have been managing a brand for a commercial real estate company for a little over a year now. I do everything for the brand from budgeting, purchasing, contract negotiations, event planning + execution, communications, managing our own app, the list could go on.

I’m thinking about switching into tech and becoming a scrum master, does anyone have any insight? I manage projects at my current job
