I get super bored consistently at the 2 year mark with a company. definitely have jumped ship every 2-3 years for past 15 years. sometimes to new industries or completely different problem sets. i know this looks bad and makes it difficult for me to get past the director level. how to combat this?

I experience this as well! I get bored after about 18 months and at 2 years I start thinking strongly about new jobs. It’s not even about the money or anything negative. I just get bored once I’ve learned what there is to learn.

In my previous company I changed departments at the 2 year mark and that helped me get to the 3.5 year mark 🤷‍♂️

I literally do not care about learning or growth. I just care about getting that sweet paycheck so I can support my family.

Stay at Director level, keep cashing checks and doing interesting work. Climbing the ladder just for the sake of it is overrated. Live your life by your terms.

I can help on the evanta side. What are you curious about?

I have this problem too but I’ve realized that the point where you start getting bored is when understanding has crystallized and a while after that is when innovative ideas start to pop up. You go from a learner to a creator.

With a huge caveat that your bosses allow you to take advantage of this transformation. If not, go learn something new

Same, except I get bored at the 9-15 month mark. Hasn’t caused me any problems yet, but I’m much less senior than you

Same. The longest I ever stayed with one company was 1 day shy of 5 years. During that time I changed departments 3 times (upward). Been at my current role and company for 4 months, so not bored yet.

What do you mean by “combat this?” Do you mean, “how do I get past my boredom and stick around long enough to get to another level in my career,” or do you mean, “how do I stop this from looking bad and get employers to hire me at a more senior level?”

Those are fundamentally very different questions. For the latter, you may just have to find the right company that will take a chance on you. When I am making senior level hires, I look for evidence of success in prior roles and it’s hard to demonstrate that if you bounce around to much - and beyond demonstrating, it’s hard to build executive level capabilities by playing 1-2 levels below that multiple times.

For the former, it probably depends somewhat on company too. Some organizations are pretty good at letting you have multiple mini-careers within the same firm. I get bored easily too, but I’ve been able to do a bunch of different types of jobs while growing within a single firm. Each time I made a change, my core focus has been on finding something that can stretch my skills and keep me interested. That way, I’ve kept things fresh while getting better at the job too.
