I get the rule of “bill everything”. But I worry that I don’t capture enough time. I use a timer program that is helpful and I know I’m working but can’t figure out what to input in the billing to reflect. What are some things you bill for that maybe some people tend forget to include? (Billable and nonbillable)

I’m a partner and am bad about this. There’s so much I don’t feel right about billing. Some conversations, email exchanges, template document requests.

Do you all really enter non billable?

/s? Spending time “billing” things that don’t count seems like double wasting time..

If your problem is language in the billing entry practice breaking up chunks of time into what you did (drafting, research, analysis). You are being paid to think about a case so if you are thinking about it and moving a case forward bill for that too. The cases don’t get to live rent free in your head! Also cutting billing time is not an associate problem that is a partner problem so let the partner deal with what’s acceptable to send to a client.

Many people bill for reading a client intake request email. Check to see if others in your firm do that. I had a frank convo with the billing partner for most of my clients and he said write everything down; let me decide to cut it.

Will do, thanks!

Try to monitor your day and compare the time spent at the computer to your time entries. Ideally they match. In reality - rather not. If the gap is significant, try for some days to track each and every activity. You will get to it.

I know I personally was losing a decent amount of times responding to emails if I’d respond to things quickly while working on something else. Feels odd sometimes but you honestly lose a lot of .1s which add up

Can you look at the accounts to see what billing descriptions other people at your firm are using?

Ask a senior or trusted partner for some bills to review as you’d like to shine up your billing commentary. Bills aren’t generally top secret, so I wouldn’t think it would be an issue at all to request this. If they don’t want you to see billing rates, an admin can redact them.

Considerations and analysis re: case strategy. Or something vague like that will usually work. It’ll likely be cut down, but at least you get your hours.

Hi all! I’m new! I started the year off planning to save for a home for myself, then rates skyrocketed. So we’re holding off. Fast forward to the final quarter of the year and we were presented with the idea of a residential assisted living facility. The problem there is we’d still need to acquire property in order to run one. The only difference is the RAL would be a business and is already registered as such. Does anyone have any experience here?

I was seeing someone for a bit over for months. Met Online. Today he broke up with me saying that he felt that he was being used because I expected him to pay for dinners and to do more. He did pay most of the meals we went out together but that was only five or six times. There were two other times when je was at my place, I bought the ingredients and cooked for both of us, as well as the Wine. There was also a time when I discovered a great deal for a French restaurant so I'm bought the deal

I am seeking advice on my first job as a lawyer out of law school. Fortunately, I received offers for an in-house position and with a law firm in their corporate department. The salary for the in-house position is $110k and $170k for the position at the firm. I have 2 questions.
(1) is it detrimental to my legal career if I go in house first; I hear there is no better training than firms. (2) how long can I wait until I respond to my offer from the law firm? Thank you!
