Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I was internally referred for an “Industry Business Consultant- Solution Architect- Healthcare and Life Sciences” at Microsoft. I fit the requirements with no problem.
My referrer looked and the portal said my status was “Application Submitted and being reviewed, Pending Candidate Response”.
The problem is no one contacted me to be able to respond to anything.
How do you recommend I handle this because it’d be a shame to lose out on an opportunity because of a lost communication.
Thank you!

Can always share that you have another offer and if they can beat the other offer. You might need to share the comp language (not necessarily the company name).
Let them know how you’d like to join based on culture fit, the role’s responsibility, and the impact you’d make creating and writing code.
Also look up average or median comp for your role title for your area. You might find that both offers are lower than median or average, in which case you can Definitely leverage that
I said to the recruiter that the org I was about to leave for a new role paid for 99% of me and my family’s health insurance premium. They’d have to cover as much or pay me more to make base salary make sense. And that the average salary for the role was $10-15k more than they first offered, so that range was more my expectation.
They were able to give me 10.5% more in base salary than first offer.
Doesn’t hurt to ask haha
If you have the time to choose, I’d go with the place you are not leaning towards. That way, if it is perceived as a money grab, it doesn’t hurt your relationship with the employer you want to work for.
If that one gives you a way better offer, then you have room to say “I got this offer. I want to work here though. How can we bring your offer up, so it makes sense for us to work together?”
If they say no. Wait another full business day then let them know you accept if nothing. In this economy, may be anxiety driving to negotiate but even a few thousand dollars is something, right?
