I got a call from a recruiter for a Big Law position that I’m interested in, the problem is that the firms lateral gpa requirement > my law school gpa. I’m 7 years into practice, is this ever waived?

I would still apply. Worst case is you don’t get the job but you don’t lose anything. You are 7 years into practice so depending on where you’re working/experience, that does make a difference. Also a man wouldn’t hesitate to apply in this situation, and you shouldn’t either.

Same! I was an incoming third year lateral. I went to a good law school but my gpa didn’t meet the requirement. My best friend was a fifth year lateral into big law from a tier 3 law school with mediocre grades but you’d be shocked how far personality and communication skills go. You have nothing to lose! Worse case scenario, you don’t get the job but it’s worth a shot!

That’s because communication and personality matter a ton too for business, confidence and plain ol common sense

Only one way to find out! Lean heavy on your experience/demonstrate why you’d be an asset as an actual practicing attorney and not a theoretical one based on curved law school grades 7 years ago. Good luck!

I didn’t realize some firms had these. Out of curiosity, what is the GPA requirement?

like

It’s an intentional privilege thing. Of course there are scholarships, but top 15 has a lot more kids from rich backgrounds than other schools. Also those firms market to other rich privileged people, who like to see that their lawyers went to the same rich privileged schools they did. TL/DR - keeps the poors out.

like

Go for it; can’t hurt to try. I lateraled as a fifth year into an Am Law 200 with mediocre law school grades— I was nowhere near the GPA requirement. Experience starts to matter a lot more after a few years of actually practicing. Good luck!

like

I agree. My GPA was horrible. But I had the right kind of experience.

like

If you’re close on GPA, certainly it is waived on occasion. If you’re way off, may still be waived if they really like you but depends on the firm.

like

Is this a thing?

like

Yep. Blows my mind.

I have seen ppl with bad grades from T14 lateral to V10 firms that are known to be very selective with GPAs for summer programs.

like

For a lateral position??? What firm cares so much about how you did in school 7 years ago if you’re profitable in your practice today????

like

Go for it and apply!

likehelpful

I’ve only seen this get waived if there’s a partner that is willing to vouch for you and back you.

like

Same happened to me a few months ago and they hired me anyway :-)

OP, yes I was just a sliver under it.

Yes, especially now when the demand for lateral corporate associates is so high. Go for it!

like

Go for it. You got this and more than what it takes.

helpful

Depends on the practice area as well and now niche. Just try! The partner might have gone to the same school or something you would never expect.

helpful

I lateraled into an Am100 after years of government practice. I didn’t have the grades they advertise for summer associates or lower level attorneys.

You can always ask the recruiter, and they will tell you what instructions they’ve been given by the firm. I know some firms really don’t give any wiggle room but some do.

like

This makes me feel better about working my tail off in law school. I went to a firm that would’ve hired me with way lower grades and sometimes I think all that work was for nothing. But maybe my very good grades will come in handy someday.

Apply for it. You could have stellar grades and not get it too.

Yes, there is always the exception to the rule and if you never try, you'll never know if you could have been that exception! Absolutely go for it.
