I got a job in-house 6 months after working at a law firm. I really love the work I’m doing (a little bit of everything) but am not getting the mentorship and training I should be getting. Do you think I should try to get a job at a law firm and then try to go back in-house in 2-3 years? Or just try to switch companies to get better mentorship?

I prefer the work in-house but mentorship is critical early in your career and hard to find in-house. I’d recommend going to a company with several junior attorneys it’s more likely they have good mentorship and training.

I wouldn’t be quick to leave. If you have outside counsel, you can learn a lot from them. You can also find mentors elsewhere.

Try to switch companies. I’m in a great role at a company where I have amazing mentorship. In-house work is often times very different from the work you do at a firm. If you enjoy the work and want to stay in-house, try another company. You don’t need firm experience to be successful in-house.

Do not leave in-house — private practice mentorship is rare

Agree with P1 and I’d add that you should talk to the leaders on the legal team about your concerns - they could just have a blind spot here. I suspect you’re very competent and clients are happy with your work, so they may not be seeing your needs because theirs are being met. For mentors, I’d ask for one at the company outside legal, and then maybe find another more senior in-house counsel outside your company but in your field.

I would encourage you to find a solution that doesn't involve changing jobs, every job is going to have a problem if you're mostly okay with your in-house job there's ways to find a mentor outside of work

Mentorship is a sham, don’t set yourself up for disappointment. You will learn on the job.

Super frustrated.

In-house at a small/mid size company whose General Counsel very, very BigLaw firm for all needs. Basically, I decide what goes to BigLaw and they hold my hand when I need it.

The issue, is that we are not an important client (nor should we be, tbh) but I have been instructed that I am restricted to this firm for all needs because of a family tie. The problem is they SUCK for what we do and need and $$$$$$$....

Any suggestions? We've got to get away from this big law firm..
