I got an email from an agency recruiter who wanted to set up time with me “sooner rather than later,” asking for my availability over the next 3 days, which I provided. She then ghosted.

@Talent — not an insult. Sadly it’s a fact. There’s a reason “ghosting” is one of the most common threads in the bowl. It’s perfectly understandable if a recruiter receives a cold email from someone inquiring about work and doesn’t respond, but there’s no excuse for a recruiter reaching out to a prospect and then ignoring their replies. In fact I have friends who’ve been “booked” and passed on other opportunities, only to be ghosted when Friday comes and they ask the in-house recruiter what time to arrive on Monday. The agency obviously found an internal team or the assignment was postponed. But to not respond after “booking” the person? This is prevalent Are you going to try to defend THAT?

@Talent - Or... he/ she ghosted him b/c we’re nothing but cattle now. I remember when recruiters actually recruited

likehelpfulfunny

I just had the same thing. A recruiter said let’s get on the phone tomorrow. I sent her times and then zip, zero, nada. So bizarre

like

While I agree questions not bashing is a more productive use of this bowl, recruiters who are kind enough to post here are definitely speaking on behalf of their profession.

like

@CD1 — you are correct, but since there are countless posts in the Bowl about ghosting (and will continue to be), and since he/ she already spent the time to kindly explain the in-house dynamics, I don’t think my reco of keeping said explanation handy was such a bad suggestion. Especially since TR1 spent time to drop some knowledge on yours truly and is most likely hoping to change hearts and minds

(continued) I followed up after those days had passed by and offered up a few additional options. No response. The job is still posted. What gives?

Ah, well, a recruiter probably isn't the person handling freelance scheduling. That's the resource manager's or creative services manger's gig. Sometimes it's combined in one person, but at larger agencies not usually. A recruiter might hand you off to the creative services manager with your availability and rate though.
So the workflow might look like this: recruiter asked to help by sourcing->asking if you're available for x date->handing that info to the resource manager or creative services manager->you not being contacted by the actual person in charge of filling the freelance role-> recruiter no longer involved (I would probably forward follow up emails to the creative services manager unless I was in charge of both). I'd say, unless you receive an email saying "welcome Freelancer, please arrive at xxx at xx:xx time" or are sent a piece of paper to sign saying you're starting, it's not booked and you are free to take any other gig you like. Most companies aren't supposed to let you in the door to begin without a signed contract and signed NDA. I know some give paperwork upon arrival.
You should ask whomever contacts you if he or she is the person who will follow up/the person with whom you should follow up.
Hope this helps.

like

@Talent — thanks for the info. You should post this response in the “Ask a recruiter Bowl” or keep it handy to drop at a moment’s notice to help stem the recruiter bashing. #TheMoreWeKnow

smart

Yes. They are, CD2, totally with you. I was specifically meaning the remark that TR1 should “keep it handy to drop at a moment's notice”. Meaning it’s not TR1’s responsibility to be ready to mitigate hostile responses. It’s our job as posters to come in without hostility when asking questions.

I find ghosting more common amongst recruiters that work at staffing agencies as opposed to in-house. Staffing agency recruiters are for the most part paid by commission so if they land a role with a client that they know they can get their check from, they’ll pursue working on that role instead. Recruiters that move to in-house roles oftentimes keep their bad habits and have the worst follow-through skills.

It’s bad form regardless.

like

Just to be clear, my ghosting situation from the original post was for a full time gig, in house recruiter (not from a staffing firm).

like

This has actually happened to me! More than once. The recruiter was no longer employed at the agency one time, another time she was on vacation. Could also be that it's a freelance recruiter working in house who is no longer there. It's not that bizarre. I've had people reply who i think just ignored my request only to have his or her multiple replies show up in my junk folder weeks later. That reminds me, I haven't checked my junk folder in a while!

Insults!!

Cool.

Are you talking about freelance or full time?
I can't imagine you're taking about full time. Being "ghosted" before his or her full time start date? Bizarre.

@Talent

Freelance

@ACD1 I think it’s more important that we all ask our questions without recruiter bashing. It’s not @TR1’s responsibility to answer on behalf of the profession.

I got it. We went a little off topic. 😁
