Be direct: this is an opportunity I’m excited about but I’m not able / wiling to take a decrease in comp. My current base is $125 — is that something you can match?
Or “I’m currently interviewing for positions in 145k range”
I say something like: Appreciate the offer. Unfortunately this would be a nonstarter for me this is a significant paycut from what I’m making now. I’d really like to make this work - is something like 145 something feasible? Specific levers in the tc for the 145 that could be more flexible than not for you to help make this work?

Always ask for the max comp before even giving them your time. This may be their max unfortunately but perhaps they can uplevel to afford you. Never also tell them your actual total comp but tell them you make where you want to be at since they will usually meet you there. So if you make $125 TC ideally yo do a job change you need at least 20-30% more to justify the hop so you should be saying your making like $155 currently
I personally do disclose current comp when asked about salary expectations at phone screen. I disclose base if I think the range is close to what I’m earning and total comp if I think the range is higher.
Disclosing prevents offers below what I’m earning and they are not going to present an offer where I can get that just by sitting there at my current company. It’s much harder to negotiate and get what you want during a phone screen. Much easier when you have an offer in hand.
F, getting this a lot lately

Did you discuss salary during the recruitment process? Start with how you’re excited and ask if base salary can be discussed. If they can move a little but not match fully are there other things you can consider? Signing bonus? Vacation days? Revision of salary in 6 months time?
Yup, mentioned it below ina bother comment. Thanks for the advice! I guess I need to determine the lowest I would take. Flex PTO, $10k bonus, no signing bonus
Why do you think they are low balling you? Would make sure your position isn’t just that you want your desired role to be valued the same as your current role.
Perhaps try negotiating level? Maybe ask what the qualifications are for the senior position to see if you can qualify, or if they have requirements that would preclude you from qualifying (Ex - min 10 YOE)
Walk away, that’s insulting! You didn’t suffer through Consulting to be setback 30k, especially in this economy.
Next time say “I am interviewing for opportunities in x range”, well above what you currently make.
