What are the long-term prospects at your current firm? I would hesitate moving to a bigger firm if you know you can make partner at your current firm and be there most of your career. A $25k increase is nice in the short term but what if you're only there for a few years?
Tough to say re long term prospects-- I didn't see partner track on the horizon there. My current firm is also not a field I personally enjoy (secured lending defense/ eviction cases). Decent pay and nice co-workers, plus a close office, is about it.
I just made this transition from corporate small boutique to corporate big law. I had all the nerves before then and then even some buyers remorse in between... what did I do?! I love my coworkers! My coworkers will be crushed! I can make partner!
Fast forward entering my 4th week of new firm life and though the hours are nuts I LOVE IT! I am learning a ton, pay bump great, bonus bump great, opportunities for more $$ becoming clearer too!
With how hot the lateral market is, the only I’d say is maybe consider a national law firm that pays 5th years more than 140k.
But if that’s not an option, I think small to national
Is a great move. If you handle it well and work hard on your way out, that small firm will always be there, and having national experience is valuable and looks great later as a small firm partner.
I wouldn’t hesitate. Question should be which national firm. And do it soon before you get too old/class year wise
Ps I borderline loved my old coworkers. We were tight. And I still don’t regret. When I was worried, some posts just like mine here of people who just made the move made me feel better. Hope I’m paying it forward here. I never saw someone post and say they regretted it.
And brace yourself for the buyers remorse before new gig starts and the old firm being sad. Tell them it’s not about money if you have to, tell them it’s about national opportunities and experience but you love them and would hope to stay in touch in the future because you never know what may happen, and bust your ass on the way out
