I got an offer from an F100 company that’s below market. The company recruiter says it’s non-negotiable. But when I asked for the salary band for my position, they said “there’s definitely room for growth” which makes me think I’m not high on the band. They also said on average most people got 2% raise yearly, which makes me think I’ll be stuck at that salary without substantial raises. Should I trust the recruiter? I really like the company and future coworkers. But 6-figure pay cut.

Yeah, they will say what they need to say to get you in the door like “there’s room for growth” .. there is always room for growth. It’s like saying the sky is blue. I think you are smart to assume conservatively you will be at or near what you come in at for some time.

likehelpful

Agree. You’ll stay relatively the same unless there is a promotion or title change.

Did you look at the salary guides to confirm it’s below market or are you going off the FAANG salaries in this bowl? What year are you? Maybe you’re at the top of the band for your experience but in a year you’d jump bands?

2% yearly raise is standard if you want a big raise in-house you usually need to leave.

What does "unlimited" PTO really mean? Accepted an in-house position. What's an acceptable amount of vacation time to take per year? (I'm coming from private practice where I could take vacation whenever I wanted as long as I hit my billables). Generally, I take two 1.5 week vacations a year and a smattering of long weekends (like a Friday or Monday off here and there). Obviously will not take that much time in the first year of a new job, but hope to get back to it. Reasonable?

From the position of those that have already made the in-house switch, would love some gut reactions/checks to my situation.

Class of 2020, started at a V80 in a regulatory practice last January. Recently lateraled to a V30 this past summer (have only been at new firm 3-4 months). Already know I don’t want to do the big law thing long term, and would really love to move in-house.

My question: how soon is too soon, and will making another switch in-house within the next year look bad?

Do others feel lonely in their roles? I moved in-house from a firm a few months ago, and while I recognize that the virtual nature of the work is a huge factor (I haven’t yet met my coworkers, so it’s harder to make friends), I also am in a small legal department where everyone is far more senior than me, so I don’t have any camaraderie. I’m glad to not only be working with lawyers (like at my firm), but I do miss the ease of having peers with whom I could easily make friends and chat.
