I got fired last year. I have extensive mental health issues. I think they're managed right now but I have no idea what to do. Thinking of trying to jump back into practice but also just have no idea what to do. Getting desperate at this point. I just want my life to make sense

Most lawyers have some form on mental health issues. Especially the ones who act like they don’t.

Are you seeking help? Counseling/medicine? So many are struggling. You’re not alone. Hope you receive treatment so you can successfully get back to work.

Take baby steps. Start part time. Exercise. Eat well. Be with friends. Avoid news. Do things that make you feel good. I’m so sorry you’re in pain. Ever since covid, mental health issues have exploded. It was unnatural the way were locked down and isolated and the repercussions continue. Find healing ways.

In a weird way I do think my firing finally forced me to heal because I needed to in order to continue my career before the firing happened I was functioning in an unhealthy way but still functioning enough to justify it.

Are you single? How about find someone who can lift you up?

Unfortunately no I'm in Pittsburgh and miss the sun

True stories
1) friend of mine had mental breakdown working insurance defense. Wife wanted him to make money. But he convinced her to allow him to take a lower paying job at public defenders office. While still stressful, he is happier and doesn’t work nearly as much.

2) A friend mine was fired b/c of panic attack. He decided that it be embarrassing to sue for discrimination. His wife was pregnant so took a year off to raise the baby while his wife work. Now he has his own firm and only has a few cases. While he struggles financially still he and wife rely more of her income. He does more around the house. But still practices law. He plans ramp up business when the child gets older.

I've been doing this already for a year, also been working at nonlegal job full-time

You should talk to a therapist and/or psychiatrist.

therapy and self-help (exercise, journaling, meditation, sleep health, etc.). Get a job at a non-profit and build up your practice confidence. Baby steps.

Also, local Bar probably provides confidential assistance. Look into that.

I make almost double what he does and am grappling with asking him to pay the difference or splitting the total cost with him (continued below)

Accept a small firm offer now or wait for potential mid law offers?

However, I have an interview with a midlaw firm next month and a part time clerkship with another midlaw firm in the Spring with the potential for post grad employment.

I have asked for a deadline for when I need to let them know by, but should I accept the small firm offer now or decline and wait and see?

Thanks for the help!
