I got hit with a Covid layoff. How discriminating should I be about my next step? I've got about a decade of experience in big law, general commercial lit. I've wanted to go in house for a few years, but positions for pure litigators are few and far between. I'm applying for in-house and firm positions, and also a few firm administrative roles that I don't want to do. Should I just take anything I can get? I'm ok on savings, just worried about long term career impact.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Not sure how to gauge this: first year lit attorney and have not been meeting hours due to general lack of work (I ask for it, people just say to hang tight until something comes up). The work I do get typically has a very quick turnaround time, so I’ll bill ~14h/day but for only a few days at a time, resulting in low monthly numbers. Is this normal for lit? Just lateralled as a mid level to a biglaw arbitration practice - the team is busy but 2 weeks in most of my work is nonbillable BD related work like helping the partner with RFPs and upcoming webinars. Firm's recruiter told me to be ready with my salary number for interview. Interview was several rounds on the same day with multiple attorneys from the office. Never got asked about salary. Is that normal? Little worried as firm recuriter explicitly said to have that number ready as I'd be asked.
