I got hit with a Covid layoff. How discriminating should I be about my next step? I've got about a decade of experience in big law, general commercial lit. I've wanted to go in house for a few years, but positions for pure litigators are few and far between. I'm applying for in-house and firm positions, and also a few firm administrative roles that I don't want to do. Should I just take anything I can get? I'm ok on savings, just worried about long term career impact.

I was laid off earlier this year from a big law firm. Took a decent job in insurance defense. Having health issues and it’s not working out. Didn’t have any savings so I took the job but wish I would have been a little more particular before deciding on next step. If you have savings I would wait as long as you can tolerate to find something that you feel confident will work out long term.

Best of luck with your health and next steps.

I was also laid off. Took a few months to find a position in my practice area. The née position is a downgrade, but at least I could be getting relevant work experience until something better comes along. Savings is one thing, but a big resume gap can be problematic. It seems that as long as you find a new position within 3 months, the gap is not a big issue. Usually lots of postings come along in the beginning of new year.

Frankly I noticed a jump in the amount of postings after the election.

Got hit with a Covid layoff in October. I’ve received three offers, but I’ve been discriminating. I’m likely taking one of the offers as it’s at a smaller firm which I feel shares my values. My philosophy has been, I will take anything that is good. If it’s not good I won’t take it. Holding out for something good for a few months is fine. Better to wait a few months for something good rather than take a bad fit and have to leave in a year.

Thank you very much! I don’t have any business either, but I have been advertising myself as someone who has a personality to generate business e.g. leadership in my local bar association. Also emphasizing that my prior firm (mid-sized ID) was not receptive to my efforts. I’ve been targeting firms that look like a good fit for me skills wise, I.E. places that want a breadth of litigation experience. If I’m a fit skills wise I apply. All of my offers have been from small firms, but I’m cool with that. I’m over bureaucracy and want to develop my own thing. If you’d like to message directly, hit me up. I’m more than happy to be a sounding board for you.

I’ve always heard that being at one of the tech Silicon Valley firms sets you up well for in house positions. Is that true across the board or only for folks there who do ECVC or tech trans work? Total YOE is up to 9 years, now what are my chances of switching my role apart from being an Architect. May be a Technical PM or Product Manager? Which one is better suited ? I don't want to completely move to management roles, rather where I can balance both my technical knowledge and functional experience. Also what @can be my Expected CTC

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.

Not sure how to gauge this: first year lit attorney and have not been meeting hours due to general lack of work (I ask for it, people just say to hang tight until something comes up). The work I do get typically has a very quick turnaround time, so I’ll bill ~14h/day but for only a few days at a time, resulting in low monthly numbers. Is this normal for lit? Part of me thinks it’s a result of poor case management, but who am I to say? Just trying to hear about others’ experiences.

Writing sample question. I drafted a really complex dispositive motion that was granted. It was obviously revised by the partners on the case but can I still use it as a sample?

Obviously I would redact or change client/identifying information. It was publicly filed and is available on the public docket. I am not one of the attorneys of record.

Curious what people have done in the past. I'm interested in lateral positions so can't exactly ask the partners I work with.

Just lateralled as a mid level to a biglaw arbitration practice - the team is busy but 2 weeks in most of my work is nonbillable BD related work like helping the partner with RFPs and upcoming webinars. Just wondering whether this is normal as a new lateral and if as a mid level I should expect to get involved with more BD as a general thing even as actual work ramps up. To be clear there are BD managers and practice managers I work with on the pitches so I'm not doing every single thing.
