I got into YC and a M7 (not H/S/W). I can’t pursue both over the next 2 years. Gut says YC & run with the startup idea, but huge sunk cost in time put into GMAT/MBA apps. Thoughts? End goal is tech/software.

YC for sure - even if you don’t end up with a successful venture that sort of experience will be valuable to recruit with for tech roles down the line, probably more valuable than an M7 MBA with no experience

Echoing the previous opinions - YC is a rare enough opportunity that there should be no regrets taking that. I’ve always use the framework of “would I regret not doing this looking back” for decision making, and my life has markedly improved since.

Congrats on YC!!! Amazing opportunity

like

YC is way more prestigious IMO than an M7 MBA. Even if H/S. And if you want to do a startup YC will provide infinitely more value than you MBA program can.

like

If you don’t understand that sunk costs are irrelevant then maybe b school would be the better option after all

likefunny

100% YC. You can always go back to school.

like

GMAT score is good for 5 years. So unless you’re towards the end of that window, hold onto your score, do YC, and if doesn’t work out, apply to HSW after YC

like

This is the right path. B school is basically an opportunity to network. YC will get you that. Your exposure at LEK has likely given you a lot of soft skill development so the MBA won’t really add much more. YC on the other hand will build out your network and get you access to people that your MBA won’t. In Silicon Valley b school networks don’t matter as much as professional networks (think PayPal mafia) Finally, the tech world still carries a bit of a bias against MBAs and consultants. You are far better off getting a YC pedigree than your M7 pedigree. If YC doesn’t work out. Go back to b school and reapply. Gmat is good for 5 years. Apps is a sunk cost and you know the deal with sunk cost. You never worry about it because you cannot go back in time and undo. Top b schools will take you back in a heartbeat once you have your YC experience on the resume. The age / competitiveness I think is just isn’t true for b schools. But Silicon Valley has a bias against age. So if anything, by delaying your entry into SV the age thing may become a bigger issue there. Bottom Line - YC is the no brainer.

You can defer an MBA admit for a year right? I believe some programs offer that option. Do that if you can!

like

Definitely defer

like

YC, no brainer.

Hey , many congratulations bro!!.I don’t think it’s easy to get a VC job even if you went to Harvard. If it’s your dream job take it. Also, would love to pick your brain . Do you mind if I dm?

funny

Lmao

FYI YC has lost a lot of luster in the last two years.

like

I would go to YC and then defer or reapply to Stanford later. You’ll have experience that no other mba can have. Flip side, is that this could be a long detour to big tech

like

What’s YC?

like

Y Combinator

Absolute no brainer YC. If it doesn’t work you’ll have your pick of M7 again with YC on your resume anyway, not to mention you won’t even need the MBA with that kind of experience trying to get into tech and software.

like

YC. If you want to exit, you can easily become a Product Manager at Tech companies, which is what a lot of folks doing MBA want to exit into.

like

This is correct ^^

like

YC for sure

like

Congrats - if you do YC and are hiring in the near future, hit me up! (SAC)

like

YC 100% - are u kidding me? If you can get into Harvard once, you can do it again (or get into Wharton, Stanford, MIT, whatever) but you can only run with YC once

YC no brainer.

Hi all, would love to get your opinion on an estimated market rate for a employee like me, as I’m thinking about asking for a raise in January but haven’t done this before. 1 YOE TS/SCI Full-Scope Clearance 1/2 thru Masters program (Analytics Georgia Tech) Been lead data scientist on team for 5+ months 2 AWS and Tableau cert (sorry had to throw that in there lol) I know this is a tough task without all the context but I’m currently making $95k and that seems to be the lowest on my team.
