I got laid off from my accounting/consulting firm in January and have since been taking a class related to my industry but from a tech angle. I prefer to leave consulting but could stay off the work and work life balance were better. I signed up for this class thinking hiring woods be soft until midyear give or take just wish the class finished. I look on this app and it seems everyone is hiring. Am I missing the boat by not being in a full throttle job search now?

Yes. Most firms are accelerating hiring to make up for our 2020 freezes.

OP - I’m sure hiring will pick up even more later but you may want to start putting out feelers in the market. Companies are slowly starting to hire anticipating Covid will slow down and it can take a couple of months to find a role (took me 5)

Yes most all industries all actively or will be ramping up. Even hospitality. You’re also now competing against the upcoming college hires too, on top of backlog of Covid layoffs. Start networking and hunting for leads asap. I got laid off in August and just started my new job last week. I was thinking of exiting anyhow but thankfully found my new role with comparative compensation (and will be working less so trade off for WLB is net positive haha). I was picky with my next step but knew the job market would be competitive and there’s many overqualified people just taking entry level roles to pay the bills at this point. I consider myself lucky tbh. Not to scare you I’m sure you’ll land on your feet soon. But be realistic in what you want to do versus what can land you a job quicker, as you don’t want a huge gap on the resume despite the pandemic. Then you can come from a position of strength again for your future career growth At least you’ll have more unemployment payments in the meantime than what I got haha

I did have an interview with one of the Big 4 Friday and sent out resumes during a break over there last couple of weeks. The course is difficult for me so I feel like it's best for me to focus on it if I'm going to do well and leverage it on my job search, but over the last couple of days I've felt restless because my eye is a bit more on the job market now and now it's like I'm less interested in the class... Maybe I should start reaching out to recruiters now and not in a couple of weeks?

like

Yeah since you’re already invested time and money go ahead and finish it, and it’s a value add for the time you’re not working at least. At the least yes start talking to as many contacts and recruiters as you can to build up your job leads as soon as you’re ready be hirable after you’re done with class. I took a few cloud certs during my time off but ultimately landed my job from keeping in touch with a contact I cold-networked with just a few weeks after I was laid off. Never know when or how long it’ll take for your desired opportunity to pop up.

Small town teachers....how do you get past the insulation? I can’t talk to anyone in my district about issues I’m having with admin because it’s a small town & they cover each other and gaslight you. The school district only cares about their PR and has vague policies that keep us from saying against them, yet we can’t say anything TO them either. My union rep is trying to help but she also said that it’s all too common for small towns. They always win & you just have to suck it up or get fired.
