I got laid off. It’s making me want to crawl in a hole and not come out

So sorry to hear that. I suggest you put on sneakers and take a really long walk. You’d be surprised how it good it might make you feel. Also, there was an interesting LinkedIn post from a guy who was laid off. He said he spent from 7 am to 9 am blasting out emails, applying on LinkedIn, etc., then took the rest of the day to visit museums, spend time outdoors, and so on. Not a bad idea since this is the only time you’ll have to do that before you’re wasting away under fluorescent lighting again 😀 Good luck.

I went through this not long ago and found myself in that same hole, which felt impossible to crawl out of. It wasn't easy, but I made it out. And I'm better for having gone through that. But for what it's worth, here's my advice. File for unemployment first and foremost. Then figure out how long you can get by before you absolutely have to take a job. Once you've got those numbers down and your book is up to date, start firing out emails. First, to the people you want to work with. Then, the people you'd settle for working with. Then, the people you'll work with if you have absolutely no choice, but see an opportunity to turn things around. But do not, under any circumstances, think you are a failure, damaged goods, or devalued. Because you're not, OP. You're just going through a shitty time that's making you question yourself. Don't do it. Don't let that shit creep in. You're gonna come out on the other end of this. Just keep a good poker face even if everything is crumbling around you. Someone out there needs your skillset and your mind. This is just a blank page left between two chapters. It's up to you to turn the page.

Wow. Thank you ❤️

I’m sorry it makes you feel that way. Crawl in the hole, mourn, self reflect, practice some self care, but you come back out! Layoffs stink, I get it. Positive vibes that you bounce back quick, when you’re ready of course.

Thanks! Trying to bounce back

I got laid off right after I bought my first house. I was reeling. 😩 It was utterly devastating. I crawled into a hole and had a 9 month pity party of Chardonnay and sweatpants amid endless job applications. My boyfriend was living with me at that time helping me but it still wasn’t so easy. Then, one day, I got an amazing contract gig for a year and spent another 5 years after that crushing it on my own. Don’t worry, you’re gonna be just fine. Better than fine. Celebrate your freedom too. It IS possible in between the panic and the horror to realize that you are free. And that means there’s another door you can’t yet see that your bad ass self is gonna march right through. Know it in your bones. ✌️❤️

You’ll get something even better. Everyone always does!

Hello I’ve been there and really feel your pain. Take care of yourself and give yourself a chance to sit with your feelings. a layoff can feel like a betrayal.

Excellent word choice. Betrayal is exactly what it can feel like.

I’ve been there a few times in my career. It’s rough when you’re in the middle of it. But I promise you, it always works out. Keep your chin up. 👊🏻🔥❤️

Been there last year. Total blindside, shit sucked. Take an entire week or two off to clear your head and do the things you enjoy. I promise you’ll go into the job search with a much better mindset and approach. Onto better things, ya got this. 👊

I’ve been laid off and I’ve had to lay people off. It’s almost never personal. And often not based on ability. There’s no reason to feel shame. When I was laid off, it sparked a sort of rebirth of my career. No longer working for that awful agency was the best thing that could have happened. Who knew?

In case anyone cares, I got a new job!

That's awesome! Congrats and good luck. You're gonna kill it.

You: 1x. Me 4x. So I can relate. Not gonna lie, it stinks. But get back out there ASAP. If you were laid off, file for unemployment.* And treat your search like a job. *If you were fired for cause, it’s hard, if not impossible to get unemployment benefits.

Getting laid off is normal. It’s not about you. The business is difficult and clients cut fees and pull back. Cuts ensue. I spent a year and and a half before I finally found my first job. Then, after six months the agency lost the account I was hired to work on. And fired me. 30 years later, I’m still in the game. Getting fired is good for you. It will make you more resilient. You want to be a survivor-not a victim. Brush yourself off and go after the next opportunity. You are stronger than you realize. This set back will make you stronger. And that feels great. Good luck.

This is no longer a BLM movement protest (which I fully support & protest with) but instead is true anarchy. 1 dead & 1 injured (critical condition) this weekend and tonight over 24 shots fired already tonight in the area. When I first went down to this area last week I felt safe, today I went down there & was scared out of my mind. Seattle get your sh*t together.

Pencil dipped in paint and shoved in my new electric sharpener. There are acts of destruction daily in my classroom. Most of my classes are 25 kids in a small room. When my attention is taken for a second, someone does something like this. Gluing things to counters. Hiding paintbrushes instead of cleaning them. 15 years, I've tried everything to cultivate a respectful classroom culture, and they just don't care. I'm so tired. So, so tired. I don't know how much longer I can do this.
