I just got told I have high cholesterol (I guess borderline high). I'm mid-30s and my family has a history of high cholesterol so I'm making this a priority. Your health is super important. You only have one body. Take care of it now so you're not in poorer health than you otherwise could be. As consultants we all make excuses, but we can all find 30 mins a day to workout. We can all buy a salad instead of steak. We can stock healthier snacks. I know this is easiest said then done (coming from someone who got takeout yesterday even though I had 4 servings of food stored from meal prep on Sunday). you owe it to yourself to see how this impacts your cholesterol levels before turning to a pill.

OP - for years, I’ve had the exact same health issue (extremely high cholesterol) that is not caused by genetics (non of my parents side of the family have cholesterol issues) nor lifestyle (I am one of the fittest of my peer group on the basketball court, and eat very clean). I too am in M&A consulting that can easily get pretty crazy/stressful. While my doctor acknowledged the possibility of medication to control cholesterol, he also suggested that I wait until I start, as the medication hasn’t been in the market long enough to have had sufficient data on long-term effects of using the drug - in my case, I would be starting on these drugs as a male in his early/mid thirties. Just wanted to share my own experience of this (please DO NOT construe this as medical advice). Happy to chat more as I have not found too many in my line of work dealing with this exact health issue, feel free to DM me

Noted. Thx

I am curious to hear, are other consultants having the same problem. Do I leave consulting ? Is there a way around this? Please share tips

I don’t think you can direct this straight to your work life, rather you need to look at all aspects of your life collectively. Work is one aspect, but to truly control you need to factor in things like diet, sleep, meditation, exercise, relationship health etc. Everyone is busy with work...

Went to the doctor recently And got similar news. Moved to a strictly plant based diet and cooking without oil. Trying to keep meat intake to Once a week. I have heard that this helps a ton minimizing heart related issues later in life. also I invested in paleton. Best of luck.

I feel obligated to warn you that this is likely a step in the wrong direction, as this will significantly increase carbohydrate intake which will increase average and peak insulin and blood glucose levels. This will in turn increase glycation damage throughout the body, especially in blood vessels, as well as increase blood pressure (via e.g. vascular damaged and elevated uric acid levels), among other negative effects of hyperinsulinemia There is nothing inherently unhealthy about meat or naturally-occurring fats, despite whatever poorly conducted epidemiological studies Jane Brody from the NYTimes likes to sensationalize—for which there is a mound of opposing evidence from anthropology, cellular biology, and real-world experiments

like

Limit intake of “vegetable” oils, sugar, and carbohydrates foremost. Prioritize sleep. Intermittent fasting. Eat in the direction of keto. Do some form of exercise. Manage chronic stress (e.g., meditation) Lastly, total cholesterol is not a very useful health predictor. There is actually a U-shape curve between total cholesterol and mortality, with levels between roughly 200-260 most optimal. Then there’s HDL vs IDL vs LDL vs VLDL, and then cholesterol vs particle number (e.g., LDL-C vs LDL-P) and particle size. And by the way, these levels are highly variable and dependent on recent diet (they can flex 30-50% in a matter of days) You’re far better off tracking A1c; fasting insulin and postprandial insulin, and the same for glucose; and blood pressure

like

There is nothing wrong with “carbohydrates”. This is a dangerous idea. Whole grains such as oats or corn are carbohydrates and scientifically proven to lower cholesterol, in part due to their high fiber content. Rather than attempting an extreme and unpleasant diet such as a Keto, adopting a balanced diet that is rich in fresh foods, and limiting any packaged or “fast” foods, is a all that most people need to do to optimize their diet.

I’ve worked in M&A for twenty years. You have to make it sustainable. What that means is different for each of us. But it likely includes a combo of diet, exercise and stress redux. I’ve never known a partner or SM in M&A refuse a colleague’s request to take better care of themselves. But you have to take charge of your lifestyle changes; no excuses

I have a good half dozen health problems that my doctors (plural) keep track of with blood tests, including cholesterol at one point. Sure, there's the lifestyle change advice, and you should follow all of it... but let's all be real for a minute. Pharmaceuticals exist for a reason, including cholesterol pills. Consider starting them, in consultation with your doctor. If drug side effects freak you out, start with taking fish oil and see what that does to your numbers. There's prescription grade fish oil available by script if you're concerned about quality of drugstore brands.

A cholesterol pill now, 5 more pills a few years down the road. Taking a pill should be your last resort after every other option has been exhausted or there are none to begin with. Try to change your lifestyle and diet (or whatever your doctor advised you to do) to the best of your ability now, because if you already have health issues now due to your lifestyle, chance are you will develop more down the road. Prioritize your health

So I got divorced earlier this year. I left my husband because he was abusive and I don't hate him anymore or feel anger towards him, which has been a big accomplishment for me. I do, however, hate his family for supporting him and making excuses for him. They tried to pin a lot of his mental health issues on me and his sister blocked me on some social media. I'm so angry with them and don't want them to be happy but those feelings are preventing me from moving on. Advice on how to move on pls?
